Wey hey!

I'm thinking about gettin' me a van to run cross border expediting (solo). there is a various number of reasons for this

1) the MTO and other governing bodies can shove they're HOS rules, well, you know where....

2) no speed limiters like I am dealing with now (105 is so boring)

3) Being single it doesn't really matter how long I'm out and about

I'm aware that things in the expedite business are slow ATM and yes it would probably be better for me to get a C or D unit, however that's where reason #1 and #2 comes back in

there is a ford van that I'm looking at in the classifieds atm and the guy wants nothing for it just take over the lease payments (51mo) but I would obviously try for new as I don't know the exact service history on said vehicle

so my question to everyone is this, is it worth it to take the dive for a van, Y/N?

(I would probably be signing on with TST if I could)

*another note if anyone knows a fleet owner that might be looking for a van driver in the Toronto area leme know*

any help would be greatly appreciated

thanks for your time
stay safe :D

Research your carrier's well, there are more than a few that will still limit you to an HOS standard even if your load does not require you to scale (HAZMAT). But as OVM said, if you really want to...and you are prepared to deal with it being slow (and southbound freight right now for vans is SLOW) for a while anything is possible! Try not to go into debt doing it tho.....right now a cash reserve is very important to have.

Gotta agree with Piper and OVM in keeping the debt load low initially (unless you have good reserves of cash) and definitel research the various carriers out there. HOS does come into play with several carriers as it is fleet policy. Some of the smaller carriers will not enforce HOS as strictly but will also try to not let you run unlimited. There are a lot of vans out there looking for work in the GTA right now as my office gets calls every day from guys looking for work. Good luck.
