I accepted a team driver’s position with a FedEx CC fleet owner and flew to California on the 6th of December and was meet by the owner of the company and on first impression seemed nice but a bit odd. I asked to be taken to a motel since I had been traveling for 12 hours from Florida so I could get a good night’s sleep. And expected to go and complete any necessary paperwork at the company office Sunday.
The company office is located in Paso Robles California and after spending all day Sunday watching the owner make bio diesel out of spent cooking oil from nearby restaurants I was told we will probably get a load offer in the morning and we would be on the road. Prior to bedding down in the truck I told him I would like to take a shower in the morning before we left knowing I would not be able to for a couple of days, I was then informed although the office had a shower there was no hot water. I would learn why later.
Well the load never materialized Monday and it wasn’t till Thursday that we picked up a load headed to Virginia, so from Monday till Wednesday night the owner continued to make his bio diesel a very dirty and greasy job to say the least. I asked the owner’s partner Wednesday if the owner was going to bath before the load was picked up and his partner informed me that the last time he bathed was on Dec 4th and he was still wearing the same clothes.
So If you are offered a drivers position with a company out of Paso Robles California DO NOT accept it. If you do you will find an owner who has no concept of personal hygiene refused to bath for a least a week and only did so after I told him he and his clothes stunk… If that wasn’t bad enough he has Psychological problems that require multiple prescription drugs to correct Paranoia and Anxiety Attacks and a couple of other personality Quirks ( I’m being kind to describe them as quirks)
Bottom line is that after leaving California on a Thursday night and making it to Little Rock Arkansas Saturday night I could take no more of his strange behavior compounded by the complete lack of trust I had in him to not get me killed while driving under the influence of his prescription drugs, I took my gear and left him and the truck and made a bee line to the Airport to fly home.
The lesson I learned is to ask a hell of a lot more questions before I take another drivers position and to try and get better insight to who is hiring me.. Do your home work if get an offer to drive, I didn’t and it cost me valuable time and money.
