Are we the only team upset about the new HOS going in to effect October 1,2005? If I read it right we will no longer be able to drive split shifts of 5 on and 5 off. this is going to suck!! Or did i not understand something???

you are right and I am mad as hell!!! I posted previously about this. I read all 378 pages of the new rules and I was floored that there was zero consideration given to team operations. There was page after page of comments from ATA, OOIDA, Werner, Scheider etc explaining the economic impact of basically removing the split sleeper exception. FMCSA thumbed their noses at us. You will HAVE to drive minimum 8 consecutive hours to allow your codriver the 8 consecutive hours off... and then another period of 2 consecutive hours off before they have their 14 hours on duty time again. Nothing under 8 hours off will stop the clock. There is NO adjustability... only 8 hrs and 2 hours or more... but less than 10. This ruling in my estimation does not address the mandate to reduce fatigue. It may help relieve fatige in solo operations... but the teams I know drive much less than 8 straight hours... that is why they have chosen to be a team operation in the first place. As far a circadian rhythm.... I feel 6 hours on and 6 hours off allow the "shifts" to stay the same every day. Now I'm looking at 12 hours on and 12 hours off to keep up the same "shift" times.

You have read it correctly. I suspect there will be a lot of teams running 5/5/5/5 even though their logbooks read 10/10. It REALLY sucks for solo drivers who can't grab a 5 hr sleeper and finish their run.

Yep. I just got assigned the night shift. I like 5 on and 5 off.

I just can't believe how much the world just hates us truck drivers. It seems that every day something else comes along to make it harder to drive. It looked like the focus was on turning all trucks into team trucks, and, now that they have started that transition, it has become "Oh wait!!! We need to screw them some other way now!!!!"

There aren't any powerful advocates to help us. I wonder if we become an endangered species we might get somebody to finally pay attention.

This is one of those times when the FMCSA is damned if they do and damned if they don't. If they create rules that actually benefit us, CRASH & PATT will be foaming at the mouth. Create rules that work against us and they're happy.
I noticed that they still did not institute the data recorders. We'll probably soon be hearing more crying on that subject.

HEY DRIVERS,

OK 'your all mad at the new HOS that will be effective this coming Oct 1, WeLL don't you all think that it is coming to a point where all drivers say this is it and STRIKE. EVEN THOUGH IT MIGHT HURT YOUR POCKETS, BUT ITS TIME TO PUT A STOP FROM US MAKING THE MONEY THAT WE SHOULD BE MAKING.

EVEN THOUGH I AM NOT DRIVING DUE TO MY HEALTH ONLY I CAN PUT MY TWO CENTS IN.

ITS TIME TO STRIKE PERIOD.

Anyone ever seen the video of what happens in Europe when their drivers strike? It shuts everything down, they just stop wherever they are if they are in an intersection they just block it up etc...every street is impassable until someone says...Um....I cant get through!...etc.

I would think that if that were here and some guy cant get to his golf game..someone would take notice.

OOIDA is considering asking FMCSA to reconsider certain provisions of new rules. Even the Teamsters are up in arms over the new split berth rules.. or should I say the lack of split berth rules!! Check out the OOIDA website or LandLine.

We don't like the new hours of service. We are used to driving 5/5 split. We have one year left on our current FL80 and are considering moving to a B Unit.

The new HOS rule is going to slow things down and will not be safe for Teams in my book. They say it's about safety, yea right. I don't like this new rule and I think We all should flood the NTSB with phone calls in regards to this matter. Maybe that will help maybe it won't you never know until you try. I hope the ATA takes them to court over this. Well there is my two cents.

Look at how a solo driver will be affected. The following senario happens every day to many of us.
At 1600 a dispatch offer comes in with a load delivering 400 miles away at 0800 the next day.
Truck leaves for the pickup at 1600
Truck drives to the pick up arriving at 1700.
Truck leaves pickup at 1800. 2 hours used
Truck arrives at delivery at 0200 10 hours used.

Now what can that truck do?. If he/she logs on duty time the 14 hour clock stops the truck at 0600 ,2 hours short of delivery, first available legal time will be 1600.

If the truck logs sleeper time first available legal delivery time will be 1200.

If these rules go through the solo driver that must log will be driven away and teams will have to take relatively low mileage ,low paying trips so that delivery schedules can be made.
Big mess coming up for sure.

Must check out landline- just can't believe this will go through as is. Guess as a solo I better stay where I'm at, and check each load offer for "household" vs. safe, efficient miles, esp. in winter! and become a refusenik. If no split logging will be possible, the solos may be going broke. Every O/O and even big companies will :censoredsign: if rates don't go up, and the trend is in the other direction, esp. with high fuel costs. If no log monitoring devices are imposed, this will mean even more cheating, and less safety.
Strike? sure it will make a lot of noise, then they will bring out the Nat'l. Guard and try out their new found skills against US! If 1930's are a lesson, strikes alone will not Get-R-Done. We will need a different voice then 1/2 + 1/2 parties we have now.
