I'm just getting into the business and looking to buy a new straight truck. I'm leaning towards a 26000# truck, as i would prefer not to log. would this be a good choice or should i consider a 33000# and just deal with logging and weigh ins? is there more loads one way than the other? more money? thanks for any advice and be safe out there.

You will have to log in either a 26K or a 33K.

You must be under 10K to avoid logs.

Under 26 K you don't need a CDL but if you run more then 150 miles from your home terminal you must log. Most of the expediting companys require a CDL no matter what you drive. Local air freight P&D and courier type operations may not.

i thought 26000# & under you didn't have to log, my mistake. i guess than i'm thinking i would like to get a c unit under 26000#. is there as much work for this truck as a 33000#? if going to have to log in either, might as well get the most profitable truck. what do you guys think that would be? thanks again for your help.

As mentioned, you log 10,001 pounds and up. All else being equal the 33k truck is a better choice. Anything that lets you get freight from a larger pool is a better choice. If you can carry 12k instead of 6k the pool to draw from is far larger.

Even if it is an under CDL truck, (25999 or less) most companies will still require you to have the CDL, and as pointed out you still have to log at over 10k. About the only thing you avoid would be having to get a IRP license plate to be fuel tax exempt, you will just be subject to paying the fuel tax at the pump and not have to do mileage reporting. (Total expense = a few hundred dollars.) What Leo is saying is right, it is why most straight truck expediters pony up for a minimum 33k D unit. Mudflap
