Maximum hours for cargo vans

I have worked with other companies that restrict the amount of hours you can drive in a cargo van, and other companies don't. Is there a rule of thumb on this? Just curious.

It seems to me a good company would be interested in the well being of their drivers and therefore would not run them much different than an HOS governed vehicle. I talked to a recruiter for one of the smaller companies about a D unit and he basically told me I had 2 choices. I could either run legal about 2000 to maybe 2500 miles a week or I could get about 3500-4000 miles a week as a solo if I was creative with my logbook. I'll stick with the companies that put limits on their drivers.

I agree, keeping it within limits. I am happy with semi long loads. Don't really like the real long ones, get too tired. Hear a lot of drivers in units like mine that all they want are the long hauls. That is why I asked this question. Wonder if anyone else is gonna respondplyn

Scott, I remember hearing in orientation the limit was 605 straight for a van which is a pretty long run. Has that changed?

Although the DOT does not impose regulations on vehicles under 10,000lbs GVW, the deciding factor in trip limits is simply common sense. We try to keep it around 750 or so without a break. No freight is so hot that it won't cool off in a ditch.

Leo - That 605 limit is for a solo Straight Truck or Tractor. That is about the max number of miles that can be done legally (HOS) in a best case type scenario. Good to hear from you - you do a great job on the forums!! - Scott
