I was driving my truck around where I live the other day doing a coolant flush when my clutch decided to go as I was pulling away from a light on a busy two lane highway. Being that I was just driving around to clean out the radiator I had no wallet and no cell phone (dumb, I know). Happily I came to rest on the shoulder in front of a Jack in the Box and I went inside and looked in the yellow pages under "truck repair" and called a place in Denton called D.T. Resources. They sent a fellow out named Tim who I later learned is the owner of the shop and who also owns 8 trucks that are leased to various carriers. He was able to drive my truck back to the shop doing the "shift with no clutch" trick while I followed him in his truck. The shop is new, clean, has 6 bays and does trailer repair also. He has a CAT certified mechanic among his 7 mechanics.
I needed some other work done on my truck so I had them do that as well. In total, I had the clutch replaced (new, not reman.), the flywheel turned, the rear shocks replaced, the windshield wipers replaced, the thermostats replaced, the coolant flush and fill completed, a new radiator drain plug, and the steering wheel removed and adjusted (it was about 15 degrees to the right when going straight down the road even though everything is balanced and aligned).
The truck went in the shop late Thursday and was done early Saturday.
Total cost: $1,750. Remember that in almost any other situation I would have also had to pay a wrecker several hundred dollars just to get the truck to the shop.
Tim also gave me a ride home the day the truck went in the shop, which was about 25 miles away.
If you are ever going down I-35 in North Texas the shop is about 5 minutes west off of the highway in Denton at the University/Hwy 380 exit (take 380 west to Masch Branch Road, go right, the shop is about a half mile down on your left in the back of a little industrial area). The hourly shop rate is $68 (Freightliner Dallas: $91). The shop is called D.T. Resources and is listed under truck repair in the Denton phone book. It's open on Saturday.
