LAW OF THE SEA TREATY (LOST), the United Nations i

Law of the Sea Treaty, according to talk shows (Quinn and Rose, Glenn Beck, etc) is back in the picture again...supposedly a senate committee passed it and it is going to possible passed in the Senate. I heard on the talk show that this treaty, if passed would give the United Nations the say so on where and who is allowed to drill for oil and would require companies like EXXON to submit applications for drilling sights to the U.N. for approval and also would require taxes to be paid on the revenues from such to be given to the U.N
Now, I have to admit that I'm not up on all that goes on in the world so I started by reading the LOST and
it's kind of frightening. Ronald Reagan rejected ot back on 1982 or 1983, he said "it is the 1st step to the United States giving up it sovereignty" in other words the United Nations would have more say so over us than our own constitution.
well, anyway, this supposedly has a great chance of passing in the Senate according to conservative talk show hosts, unless concerned people research into this and call their senators to stop it.
I've always heard it said "if in doubt, hold out til you know for sure". We as citizens need to keep up on these issues.

or google: Law of the Sea Treaty (LOST) and see what you think.

I for one would be interested in some insight on this. As I said I heard this on talk radio programs and read LOST and sure would appreciated hearing others views on it.
thanks

RE: LAW OF THE SEA TREATY (LOST), the United Natio

It is true the Law of the Seas treaty has never been ratified. The original resolution (UNCLOS) was presented to the UN general assembly in 1983. Every member nation except the United States has signed and adopted the treaty. This document is nothing more than a framework to govern the two thirds of the world that lies under water.Though the U.S. has not officially O.K'd the document We do follow the guidelines set forth in it. Bill Clinton in fact signed the treaty and sent it to the senate in 1994. It has basically floated around there ever since until this year when President Bush asked the senate to sign it into law. Several years ago it was succesfully used to thwart Russia from claiming mineral rights in several places throughout the world. Without some sort of frame work like the Law of the Seas treaty, any nation or entity could lay claim to just about anything they chose to as long as it lay under the sea.The major argument against this treaty is that it could lead to some sort of international bureaucracy. I beg to differ. I believe it favors order over chaos. I was involved in crafting the commercial fishing portion of the treaty back in the early 1980's as part of a World Affairs club project at Kent State.I fully believe it is for the good of all people involved.

Didn't I read somewhere that Russia had planted their flag at the North Pole? On the ocean bottom, under the ice cap!
