I'm getting ready to purchase a laptop for my van, and I'd like to know what everyone else is using and what kinds of problems you've had. I'm looking real hard at a Panasonic ToughBook.

HI
I've had 3 Compaq Presario's in the last 9 years. Never let them get cold it killes the monitors.
I run Windows XP, Microsoft Streets and Trips, and Coral's Word Perfect. One trick I've learned is to wrap duct tape around the power cord where it plugs into the computor. I move mine around so much it kinks the wire right there and before I know it's frayed.
THANKS
HAVE A GOOD ONE

It's hard to beat a toughbook, not only are they a laptop computer, I think they dubble as a jack stand :D

Brand wise I guess it really does not matter. The avertek's at sam's and wallyworld come rather well spec'd for 800 dollars, 2400 Mhz, DVD burner, wide screen.. You get the idea. However, if you want to spend the $$ get the toughbook you won't be sorry.

If you go used PIII or better, at least 256 megs ram, 30 gig hdd, dvd-rom and a 15 inch screen. Windows XP home or pro.

GPS software, D unit get ATK's co-pilot truck, a b unit you can use microsoft streets or delorme.

I'm also a fan of the Compaq. I'm on my second one, and I would still be using the first one but I needed more power(insert your best Tim Allen grunt here). Mine have been subjected to temperature extremes and haven't had any problem. But, I know Bryan and....well, never mind.

I use a Dell Inspiron with all the crap that you get on there and Microsoft Streets and Trips and ALK's CoPilot Truck. If you have never used a GPS before this CoPilot Truck may be useful to you. www.ALK.com. I dont like it but I have it. never had a problem in the truck with my Dell and I throw it from the sleeper to resturant and it sits on a stand by my seat and bounces all of the country with me.

They are over priced. But will do the job. I think most are PIII 850's.. If your laid over in Minneapolis check Que Computers, they have room in their lot for a D unit. They are selling 1000Mhz or better for 450 to 500 dollars. Or find one on e-bay that has a buy it now or is ending during the time your laid over and make sure the seller will allow local pickup. Heck I have had things delivered to me at the truck stop for a small fee (tends to be less than shipping). Don't bother with pawn shops.

Best buy and the like have value line laptops starting at about 800 dollars. Walmart super centers also have averteks with everything you would need in that 750-850 range.

I have a Dell Lat. that sits on pass. seat in a docking station. DVD, GPS works great. The docking station gives it more of a stable situation than just letting it bounce on a stand. I have a small pillow under the docking station and straped in. I had this laptop for about 3 years now. I purchased it from ebay, also got my wife one. Hers is a Lat. C640 1.5 gighez. P4, DVD the works, came with nice case too. For around 600. Mine was around 500 at the time, I think the same as I have is going for 300 to 400 range. (C600). Go with what you like. Sprinter owners love thier Vans as well as Chevy owners love theres. Same with laptops. Some would not own a dell, I will not own a Ford. I am going to speak well of the Dell as I have one, been a dell owner since 1996. Hand them down to the kids when I'm done with them.

Well, the Panasonic ToughBook, although my first choice, is a bit pricy, so yesterday, I did some shopping, and I purchased a Toshiba Satellite Model L15-S104 from Best Buy here in town. It was $799.00 with a $150.00 "rebate". I also puchased MS Streets and Trips 2005 GPS, with the recommendation from so many of you folks. This is a nice laptop. It has an 1.3GHz Intel Celeron M processor, 256MB memory, 40GB HDD and Windows XP (Home edition). (I'll be upgrading the XP to Pro, as soon as my wife stops yelling at me for making this purchase. ;) ). I also purchased the service that Best Buy offers. I told the sales guy what I would be doing, and he told me that the service agreement covers "everything"! Even if the battery begins to hold less and less of a charge, they replace it. Couldn't pass that up, with batteries running $75.00 and up.

I really like the MS Streets and Trips program. Can't wait to get out on the road and see what it can really do! I want to thank everyone for your input. I'm not one to rush out and make a "major" purchase, without doing some research, and asking questions on EO makes some of the research really simple.

Be safe everyone!
