Shortly before I went in, Prince oozed onto the scene. There was still some good music around at the time; Ratt and Van Halen were popular, but Prince was out of left field. I worked in the mall, and all my co-workers were going to see Purple Rain. I couldn't believe it. Sodomites hadn't yet been embraced by society so I couldn't believe he was becoming popular.
"He's had more women than you'll ever have!" one guy averred in his defense.
"More men, too" was my reply.
So I go to basic training shortly thereafter, and we have a guy in our flight whose name was Prince. Big guy. The sergeant came running over, got in his face, and demanded, "You're not related to that singer, are you?"
"Sir, no sir!"
"GOOD! I hate

got music!"
Little did he know, but there was a small black guy next to Prince who, before enlisting, made his living as a Prince impersonater. Had pictures of himself all dolled up as Prince and everything.
On top of that, we had about 6 guys from Detroit who were into rap, and whenever the TI and assistant were gone, they'd start in on their crap. I couldn't believe anybody would listen to such crap that was so musically and intellectually offensive.
But it's child's play compared to the mind-numbing crap out now.
I was watching a YouTube video of a rock band playing a show at some fest in Florida. The band was rocking, and the crowd looked bored. Someone mentioned that in the remarks, and a band guy responded and said that's how they always are in Florida. Guitar-based rock is passe, somehow. Can't imagine it, but that's how it is.
Pretty soon, the people in the generation enlisting now will post something about how the youngsters of the future, how they can't believe they don't like rap, and how projectile vomiting on stage is popular.
Now if you'll excuse me, there are some youngsters on my lawn I have to deal with. And I have the sudden urge to wear my pants up around my nipples.
