I drove a Cargo Van for a while for an owner-operator before. I now have a 2006 Sterling Straight Truck. I just started with the straight truck after leaving a dead beat non- paying owner operator..................anyway thats a different matter all together.................My Question is this I often have extra showers and they sometimes expire. I was in a TA and had 2 showers that were going to expire that day. I saw where there were a couple of cargo vans in the parking lot. One guy was in the drivers seat. I walked up and was talking to him, I told him I had an extra shower that was going to expire if he wanted it. He said no as if I was offering him charity. When I Drove a Cargo Van I sometimes got a free shower offered as I was paying for one at the counter and was NEVER offended. This guy seemed offended. Maybe because I came to him and asked. Even then I would have not been offended. Free Showers often would save me money. Now the expire many times before I can take them. I always have an extra shower and do not mind sharing them with the Van, Sprinters, or any Driver that needs them. However I do not want to offend anyone either.Maybe I should let them expire..........See U around

If Jim and I see that someone is going to pay for a shower and we have extra showers on our card, we will always tell the person behind the counter to just swipe our card. The driver's are always thankful since it saves them a few dollars.
I don't know if I would walk up to someone though and ask them if they wanted a free shower. I can see where someone might take offense. Instead, call out on your CB to let driver's know you have showers available. This way, you do not have to worry about offending anyone.

Well I may have mislead you, I actually walked up and was asking about his company, It was the one I used to work for and was asking about some people and made small talk and exchanged a few stroies about some people within that small o/o group. I didnt just walk up and say "Hey Man wanna free shower" Anyway I only give free showers now if I see they are going to pay

I think when you walked up and told the guy you knew he was broke because he drives a van and "oh, by thr way you smell like he@@, you want a free shower".... yeah, maybe you offended... just kidding, you were fine, some are just too stupid to realize a good offer when it happens.:7 :7
I see nothing wrong with it at all. I'd have appreciated the offer even if I didn't need it. I like the idea of just handing your card up when they're at the counter to pay though. They obviously don't have 2 or 3 of their own or they wouldn't be paying so they should be appreciative.

being a van driver myself you did nothing wrong i for one would of been happy if someone did that for me there were many times that i was nowhere close to flying j or had no showers so it definitly would not offend me if someone came up to me same company or not and offered me a shower so don,t let one person who may or may not have been offended stop you from doing that whether its at shower counter or out in the parking lot

I know when I was driving we couldn't fuel at the j because they wouldn't take our card. When I got thru loading one time the only truckstop within 200 miles was a j. Now let me say I pulled flatbed and it just so happened the last time I rolled up my tarps was in a muddy parking lot so I didn't want to ride for 200 miles filthy as a hog. I was going to pay for the shower and this driver says here scan my card I got 2 expiring today. I was grateful. I guess he could look at me and tell I needed a shower. The funny thing about is almost everytime I took a shower the clerk would say let me guess you pull flat bed? I don't see how anyone could pull flats and be a member of the T.A.S. Sometimes I took two a day. Oh yeah if you don't know T.A.S. stands for Truckers Against Showers.

I know flying j gives tho accum. points for showers, but they are many drivers out there for one reason or another don't use the J. I think your a very Upstanding individual. Anyone whom offers one a shower with no strings attached out of the kidness of your heart should be recoginized. My Hats off to ya.

The difference I was asked by the Person. In your case you asked them out of the kidness of your heart.

With so many people trying to scam these days I automatically say "NO" to almost anything people ask me.
I know when I was in a small truck I went without showers because of the cost, and I would have been happy for a free one.
It's a hard call. Calling out over the CB seems the best way, but CB's are more of a big trucker thing.

Nothing wrong with what you did.you where just trying to be nice.I had the same thing happen to me. it was a pretty little girl who drove for the same company as me and I told her I had a extra shower we could share. needless to say she did not see any humor in that.some times it just does not pay to be nice.....
The CB would be the easiest way to get rid of them. I guarantee you'll get takers. As I've said in other posts, I live a couple miles from 2 truckstops.. and it's a common thing to hear guys asking if anyone has an extra shower, or guys asking if anyone needs a shower ticket.
Maybe it's just a small town Ohio thang.
