Introduction and Questions

My name is Rick and I am owner of a four truck local delivery and moving and storage company located in Palm Beach County Fl. Due to current demand we are getting more and more request to do long distance moves and deliveries. I have just applied for all of our regs to go interstate and have quotes out for insurance. My main concern is that the additional insurance expense will be a drag (financially) until I am able to compensate the additional expense with additional income. I am averaging about one to two out of state deliveries per month. Up to now I have subbed them out to a local guy that has a gooseneck. Now he can't meet my needs. So I will purchasing a strait truck with a sleeper. To offset my income I want to haul expedited or ltl. My questions....

What is the average you guys pay monthly for insurance?

I will be running two man teams for out of state deliveries. I pay my current local drivers above average for the industry here. What would be fair compensation for team drivers?

I'm sure I will have many more questions. Thank you in advance for such a great resource and your time.

I pay just over $500 a month in insurance. I am not leased to anyone, but work for a guy with his own authority.
Before I was leased to Ceva and they covered the Liability part of the insurance when I was under a load with them
I drive an under CDL Straight truck BTW

Also, the majority of Owner Operators here get a per loaded mile pay and can differ from company to company and even from load to load
The drivers who are working for an owner usually get a percentage 70/30, 65/35
The pay for a van is usually under a dollar a mile(very rough estimate)
The pay for a straight truck is usually over $1.20 a mile(once again a rough estimate)
Dead head pay comes into play also

Keep in mind the rates poster quoted was rates that the average carrier pays contractors.
and should not reflect rates that you should be charging under your own authority.
