hydroplaning

Could someone please tell me if you can hydroplane when hauling 80,000 pounds? I have been looking for the last 2 hours online and cannot find this information anywhere. My husband is a truck driver and thinks you can, some of the other guys at his terminal are saying no, we would like to know the answer to this and where to find information on it, so we can print it out and prove them wrong, Thank you Brandie

Yes you can. It has very little to do with weight. It is getting space between tire and road which can and does occur on wet pavment no matter the weight.

Look into Schneiders training site in Wisconsin where they actually make drivers experience this in their training program. You can most likely find it on their site somewhere

thank you so much for your response, they have been giving my husband a hard time about this and he wants to put them in their place, he has been a driver for 27 years and they act like he is an idiot, Thanks again Brandie

I have had my steers hydroplaning on me at over 100,000lbs. So I would add a yes to that too. It's a bit hairy when it happens, I'll tell you that for free.

Any vehicle can hydroplane at any time. I don't have a reference for you but that's a fact. Another point not yet mentioned is it doesn't really matter if it's 80000 or 35000 because the weight on the steers is going to be in the 11500-12000 range either way and the steers are the ones that usually hydroplane. If their argument is the 80000 inhibits it then ask them if it can happen at 35000 pulling an empty and when they say yes point out to them the weight on the steers is the same either way.
