How did you meet?

Thirty-two years ago tomorrow, April Fool's Day, I met a guy who would become my mate for life.

It was early evening in Little Itly, a neighborhood in Wood River, IL. Little Itly had three markets, three taverns, a park, a gas station, a dry cleaner(?) and about 400 residents. My best friend lived there all her life and knew everyone and I thought I did too. Until some guy pulled up beside us (as we walked down the street) and said "Hey little girl you want some candy?" Well, I just laughed as he and my friends brother sped off.

Later that evening my girlfriend and I left the Old Tyme Lounge I came out of the bar, tripped on the steps and knocked this same guy off a 10-speed bike. Soon a gang of kids formed and off we went to party the rest of the night away. Later I got a ride home on that 10-speed.

And the rest is history.

So how did you meet your mate?

My joke is I met my wife when I was dating her mother. The truth is that during college I'd go hang out at her parent's imported car parts store and talk cars and parts. She showed up the second semester and then I started hanging around the store for other reasons. That was 1978.

Ah, you young kids and your way of meeting!

Frank and I have been married 42 years in June. He was my big brother's best friend in high school. It was like having another brother since he was around the house all the time. Then one night I came in from being out with a bunch of girlfriends and there he was, sitting in my Dad's recliner. We just looked at each other and something clicked. Amazing! Frank was gone in the Navy while I was finishing high school.

While he was home on leave we sat up talking one night and realized we were meant for each other. The moment we finally said the words we loved each other Frank's watch stopped at that minute! He had just had it worked on and it never ran again!! I guess you could say time stood still for us!

My brother thinks it is great. He kept telling us both for so long that we were perfect for each other but neither of us would listen. Obviously, he was the best man at the wedding!
