Hours of Service log question

I am going to be starting with a company next week doing expediting in a 5 ton

Now I am new to commercial driving and the logs (did 7+ years Military driving), but understand that I have to keep 7+ days of logs with me.

Now when I pickup my truck and drive it to the warehouse, how do I start recording my logs? Should I create 7 days of blank logs showing that I was off-duty 24hrs a day? Or should I just start with the day I start driving and make a note that I have 10hrs off-duty before I start driving?

I am in Ontario and our Truck Assoc has logs that come in a book (31 days), I would prefer not to have to create logs for every day this month showing 0 hrs on duty...

Am I clear, or have I really confused everyone

Create a one page entry showing you off-duty. Draw a line straight across from midnight to midnight. Notate where you were.

Under the grid write "Off-duty, Toronto, Ontario, Aug 1 - Aug 7, 2008"

That's how I would do it.

If you are picking up the truck near where you live, don't worry about the drive to pick it up. Start your log book after you finish your paperwork, and, if you aren't going to drive right away, put yourself in the sleeper. Never put yourself off-duty if you are in the sleeper. Although they mean pretty much the same thing, you can't be in a sleeper if you are at home and you aren't off-duty if you are in the sleeper. Off-duty applies to you getting out of the truck to eat or shower. On-duty, not driving for fueling. repairs, pickups and deliveries while you are with the truck.

Yes, much fun indeed... at least I finally got my truck. The company I am signed on with is putting me to work Monday doing local LTL, then on Wed into the States. That should be a fun experience

I have always done it the same as chetjester and never have had a problem.Not 1

but a IL state trooper tried to tell a driver of mine it wasnt right.
but he couldnt find anything wrong so maybe it was just his way of taking up the hands time.
