Okay for the benefit of everyone trucking through ON....

Where are the best places to layover in Ontario?

Food?
Parking?

I hate the country, all those animals walking around un-cooked.

Ok in Mississauga the Dixie Rd/401 area. Lots of parking (husky, shell on brittania/part of flying J now, plus others), you can walk to several food places, califonia sandwiches, subs, BK, super macks, plus others.

The J at x579 (napanee) was alright, the 10 acre truck stop in Belleville was ok but haven't been in quite awhile (x531?) off 401, up north in Sault Ste Marie I prefered the Husky at the east end of town. The Petro-Can in Nipigon (west side of town on 11/17) good food last time there, good parking (was a little noisy for me, too many idling, ok it was -34).

have to think about some others.

The best places? ...almost anywhere *but* a truckstop.

Yes, I'm being controversial and not going with the established flow in the thread so far but we can park & enjoy the same places any large RV can also enjoy... and that being the case we will avoid the truck stops as much as possible.

The possibilities are almost endless... just need to break out of the "thinking like a trucker" and start thinking like an "RVer on extended vacation". :+

Hi

Jo JO's on Dixie Rd. Missisauga. Best steak in Ont. for under $10.00CND.Easy access to repair shops, hotels, a pool hall and freight lanes.A good place to get info on border crossings and other expeditor info, alot of CND expediors park here.US ATM cards work at the Sunoco next door and there is a Money Mart across the street.

Service plaza on the 403 in Brantford. You actully exit off the highway so you can get back on going either way.Sits between 2 industrial parks and is just 1 exit east of the 3rd industrial park.

Yeah Brian right in the area. I use that Sunoco all the time. See several boys sitting there on the other side of the fence.

There is a new Petro-Pass stop in northeast Mississauga at the corner of Dixie and Drew Roads. It is just north of Alumni-Bunk's location.
The Husky Truck Stop at Courtney Park Drive and Kennedy Road near Highway 410 has had a Super 8 Motel added. It has a gym and pool and of course Truck Parking.

Do not expect to be welcomed at a Wal*Mart in Ontario for anything other than a short stay. Wal*Mart Canada does not own the land from what I can tell. Local Mississauga zoning ordinances prohibit truck parking in residential and retail areas.

The exit from Highway 403 is at Garden Avenue.

If you read the Mississauga bylaws re truck parking, it's illegal to park anywhere except an industrial area. The bylaws restrict anything over a 1/2 ton pickup or van from your own driveway even. Although this is not enforced (many take home their 3/4-1 ton trucks, unless neighbour complains) you can not take home your C-D-E units in Mississauga. Your also not allowed roof antennas (not tv, shortwave etc) your satellite tv antenna has to be small etc and your driveway has to be paved!

Like toronto mississauga has too many bylaws.

The Husky at exit 195, and Fifth Wheel at 199 in the London area always have lots of parking.

I see lots of expeditors parked at the Petro Pass on Wilton Grove Rd in London, just off exit 186 on the south side of the 401. Not sure how many stay overnight there since the building is closed at night, but I usually see 5 or 6 trucks there in the afternoon. Not a lot of tractor-trailers go in here because of the size of the parking lot and the tight turns out of there (and the proximity to the big truck stops).

The 403 Garden Ave place doesn't have a huge amount of truck parking, and the food places inside are closed at night other than Tim Hortons. Never been to the drivers lounge there, but it has to be pretty small, being inside the Esso convenience store. But bascially the only place to stop on the Woodstock to Hamilton stretch of the 403.

There is a truck stop at exit 250 Drumbo Rd, but it is closed overnight, but has lots of parking. And a relatively new one at 268 (hwy 97) just down the road from where the old "Two-Lane truckstop" used to be. Doesn't look too busy when I drive by around midnight each night.

An amendment to my remarks about the Drumbo Rd exit 250 truck stop. I noticed the last couple nights the lights being on, so I remarked on the CB about the guy forgetting to turn off the lights. Somebody came back and said they have new owners there and are open 24 hours now, and that they have one of the best $10 steak dinners you can find.

I guess someone figured with Toyota opening next year 6 miles to the west that there might be more truck traffic wanting to stop nearby.
