Everyday household items could be created on the kitchen table by a "factory in a box" such as dishwasher knobs, bath plugs and even drinking bottles

The Thing-O-Matic is a 3D printer which can create any object out of plastic within minutes.

It was launched in Las Vegas this week and costs £790.

So far it can only make small plastic objects but its designers claim that future models could combine plastic with metal to make electronic gadgets.

Bre Pettis, the chief executive of Makerbot Industries which is the company behind the device said: "We want to democratise manufacturing."

The current Thing-O-Matic can make objects six inches, by six inches by seven inches.
