Express-1 increases straight truck pay rate

As of March 20, 2005, Express-1 will increase the pay rate from its previous rate of $1.15 to a new rate of $1.20 per loaded mile for 22/24 foot straight trucks.

Chief Operating Officer Jeff Curry says that the solid performance of the company's straight trucks in the expedited market have warranted this pay raise.

He says that he foresees another record breaking year for Express-1 in 2005.

Recruiter Scott Hancock says, "It's good to see that expediting is back and our company is moving in a positive direction. We are commited in providing the best opportunities for owner-operators by working hard to foster a relationship between them and Express-1."

"It feels good to be able to raise these rates and give something back to our hard-working owner-operators and drivers!"

way to go express-1! However, they are still behind one of the "other" big companies that pays a flat rate per-mile. According to the stuff panther sent me a 22-24 foot straight truck gets 1.22 a mile. Is it possiable express raised it because they *had* to in order to retrain and get new drivers?

This is a step in the right direction. I think all comcpanies need to do something to help out with the current fuel and freight situation. I posed a question to understand why folks were leaving E1 and have gotten some very good feedback. Based on that feedback I dont know that this increase would have stopped those departures.
I am one of E1's biggest fans and would never say a bad word about them. They have been very good to me and I will always be greatful for that. I do think something needs to be done about back hauls and deadhead. I have expressed my concerns and I am sure I will hear some back soon but for now I can only say I do believe in them as a company of good people and kind people.

I continue to hope I can grow with them but I will say I never close all my doors to other options. I can also say outside of a few folks, I really have no infromation that shows anyone really jumping for joy about where they are with any company. In my case a very bad two months of mechanical problems has made a difference in my happiness and that being the case, I have to look at all things contributing to my trucks less than perfect performance.

Oh well I will keep my fingers crossed that this is just step one in helping out all of our trucks and our wallets.

We are presently looking to negotiate a new contract, (formerly with Conway-Now). Took the winter off, wife had hand surgery. Looking at Express-1, and Panther II. It was indicated to us that Express-1 was tentively going to raise its rate to $1.25, I can only assume that they reconsidered.

With diesel fuel prices going thru the roof, IMHO fuels surcharges to the owner operator is going to be a very important consideration for us.

It is great to see some movement in the area of driver compensation.
It is clear that all carriers are going to have to address this issue. With large increases in fuel, operating costs, and inflation, rates will have to change.
As these costs keep climbing you will see many drivers leave the industry. We are starting to see some of it now.
Companies that wait until the last minute may find they waited too long. If any think fuel and expenses will decline any time soon, they are singing the wrong song.
Just my opinion of course

DaveKC, A very dead on response and opinion. I have talked to many owners and drivers and many are on the edge of breaking. If I had new trucks and big payments I would be folding now. The fact that I own one of my trucks outright is keeping me a float. If the companies do not keep up with all the costs this bubble is going to burst soon
