IT'S SOMETHING THAT GET'S IN YOUR BLOOD AND IT'S LIKE A DRUG I QUEST
BUT THE BEST WAY TO DO THIS IS TO BE RETIRED FROM SOMEWHERE ELSE
AS THERE ARE GO TIMES AND BAD TIMES AND WHEN FREIGHT IS SLOW IT HELPS
TO HAVE OTHER INCOME COMING, ALSO IF YOUR SPOUSE WORKS THAT HELP'S TO
I DON'T LIKE 8 TO 4 AND SAME THING EVERYDAY LIKE THE FREEDOM
TO COME AND GO AS I PLEASE, SO GIVE IT MUCH THOUGH AND THINK AGAIN
BEFORE GOING TO A COMPANY I HAVE BEEN WITH FEDEXCC 10 YEARS.
IT'S A LOVE HATE RELATION SHIP WHEN YOU ARE DOING GOOD YOU LOVE THEM
AND WHEN NOT IT'S DIFFERENT STORY BUT GOOD LUCK IF YOU DO COME IN
GIVE DAN TILLERY AT KNOXVILLE A CALL ON A VAN IF YOUR GOING TO DO THIS
BE COMFORTABLE

I have to agree with you 100% geo, about you telling the post it's best to be retired. But it shouldn't be like that!!!!!!!!!! This is a profession, and yes I mean Profession, and not some seniors way to travel around the country and think they can get paid to go site seeing all over. Then to go out of service for how ever long they dam well please. This is the exact thing that is forcing the companies to have to recruit all the drivers that they do, that most posters on this site are whining and crying about, because of the lack of trips. This is a true profession and not some retirement travel center.

I am the first one to respect my elders and I'm not saying anything bad or derogatory about old, or retired people. It is good for someone retired to work 1 or 2 days a week, but this isn't the profession to do that in. (I just know someone will say something about that, and we all know why)

To have to give out information like that is like saying not to do this expeiting thing unless your a retired person, or your wife works so you can go out of service when ever you want, but it's true. Would it not be better if drivers had loads all the time and went out of service for a short rest or a breakdown?

If the companies would make it a mandatory 3 weeks in service and 1 week out, or 2 in 1 out, This profession would be a lot more profitable for the drivers, and less headaches for the companies. There surely would be a lot less drivers to have to deal with.

About 6-7 years ago Roberts (now FEDEX CC) was toying with that idea that all trucks would have to be in service 3 weeks every month as a minimum. They would schedule what week of the month you would be free to go out of service.Well there was a huge protest from the fleet that this was not legal, that if this policy became concrete many trucks would leave etc.Drivers and Contractors said that a individuals needs change every month and they want time off at the beginning of this month but at the end of the following month. It probably would have been impossible to administer fairly so it was dropped. Right now Fedex CC wants a truck to be available 60% and accept loads at a 60% level.I don!t know if this policy gets enforced,as I am personally aquainted with a contractor out of Akron whose numbers run about 40% each year. It has always been a contentious issue about retired folks getting on, not being hungry so additional trucks get put on to compensate for those units that are basically out here to sightsee etc. I don!t have an answer other then to stay out of the B unit class which is what most of these folks drive. Before any retired folks yell at me I know of several couples that are retired but run hard and do a excellent job. I think what GEO was saying is the percentage that basically are out here just for something to do and take away loads from younger people who have families to support etc. No real answer for that.

Why not just hire all company drivers if you are going to say when a driver can and can't work? Fact is ANYONE (retired, for a profession, etc.) can do expediting as an owner operator, and it's up to that individual to decide the amount of work they need to do to make the amount of money they want to make. Things usually balance out well for both company and driver if both are fair to one another. It's best to be up front about your amount of availability as a driver before signing on with a company.
