I am a firefighter in Houston, Tx. A friend (other firefighter) and I have been looking into starting our own business and have considered hot shotting. As firemen we only work 2 days/ wk over three days. Our plan would be to each have a truck to pull a goose neck. We would make runs on our off days and have one vehicle or the other and the trailer if necessary (depending on the load) avail. to be on the road at any time. We have a friend who deals with oil field equip. and used to dispatch hot shotters. He has given us a lot of insight into the biz and some connections we plan to meet with to cost analyze whether we would get enough work doing the type of runs we want ( within state ) and freight our intended equip can handle. I have discovered a lot from this site regarding licensing, insurance, plates, authority, etc. My friend and I are both class B exempt for driving firetrucks. I understand I need a CDL for GVW over 26k lbs. What steps would I need to get this type of license. If I dont haul loads up to this weight do I still need it. I know most people in this business are not doing it part time. Am I foolish to think this would be a good side occupation and private business? What things am I unaware of that I should consider before commiting.

While expedite is often referred to as hotshot, it's a different critter. Being in oil country, true hotshot may be just what you need to fit in with your fire fighting. What you're looking to do wouldn't work well with expedite, needing to get back in a couple of days. Try a hotshot website.
