Some threads are locked as a proactive measure, to avoid trouble before it flares up. Since it hasn't yet, there's no reason to remove the thread, but allowing posting to continue is not a good idea, when it looks like it's just going to degenerate into name calling.
As for the soap operas, they're like buses - there'll be another one coming...

Well, perhaps "watchful waiting" would also be a good approach since the approach above seems based on anticipatory anxiety.
