Could this be you?

The Reality of It All

She showers, does her makeup and fixes her hair
Then flips through her closet for something to wear
Pantyhose, jewelry, and heels that match her purse
If she doesn’t coordinate, nothing could be worse

Her day is like clockwork every weekday morning
My Qualcom beeps any day, anytime without warning

I grab some jeans and choose one of ten tops
Just two pairs of shoes so I drive in my socks
I always wear lipstick and sport a messy do
Simple gold earrings, nothing fancy or new

*******
She rushes to Starbucks then work, same routine
And sits in her cubicle by Jane the cigarette fiend
She answers the phone all the while she’s typing
Abandons the keyboard, grabs a pen and starts writing

Hers is the same day in and day out
Mine will be different without a doubt

I arrive at the shipper different day different scene
No bosses or coworkers who sometimes are mean
My freight is loaded and I make my dispatch call
No ringing phones, just my radio… that’s all

*******
She lunches at the café, sometimes with the boss
She gets the tab cause today he is cross
By two she has a headache and is feeling the stress
A comp day would be nice so she can get some rest

Her upscale life has its’ ups and downs
Mine can be simple when I know no one in town

I have lunch on the GW, I’ve sat for two hours
A truck is home but it’s no ivory tower
My back is aching and my feet starting to swell
This jam will last to rush hour I can tell

*******
My job isn’t glamorous, I’m not part of a clique
No office parties, with small talk and drinking till I’m sick
Her life is all that but maybe not what it’s cracked up to be
Do I want to be her? Would she want to be me?

Coco, this is so true! You must have had some "office experience" in order to write this! People can't even imagine it, if they haven't experienced it. Getting rid of the hose and heels is the BEST! india

After one year of driving I got rid of the "office wardrobe" with the exception of appropriate clothing for weddings and funerals.

On one occaision I noticed a well dressed woman in a not so well dressed car who must have been on her way to work. She looked over smiled, and waved. I watched her in the side mirror while she studied the truck. This is what prompted me to write this piece.

On the other hand, I've got looks from women who must be thinking "OMG what was she thinking when she decided to live in a box".

It's just preference ladies....;)

Excellent Coco!

And oh so true. For each person that hates their job, there's someone wishes they had it.

Love the piece! I too am leaving my good, steady office job and paycheck for the life on the road. I already put away all my 'nice' office type clothing. I've always beena jeans and t-shirt kinda girl anyway!
