Just a thought. Do you have to have a class A CDL to drive a D straight
Truck? Or will a class B CDL work?

A Class B CDL is all that is required for a D unit. However if the unit has air brakes you will need a air brake endorsement. Also most carriers want you to have a haz/mat endorsement.
