Bug Shields

I have a bug shield (or bug deflector) on the hood of my truck. It's one of the older style straight ones (it isn't curved and aerodynamic looking). It seems to me that this kind of bug shield catches a lot of air and that I might get slightly better mileage if I removed it. I don't see a lot of bugs on it, so I don't know how many bugs it's really keeping off of my windshield anyway. Any thoughts on whether removing it would help my mileage?

Perhaps a wax job on the bug shield would greatly improve the mileage:-}

I had a freightliner shield that contoured to the hood of my ford vans and it seemd to have little or no effect on the bugs or the mileage. The deflecter paid for itself in the winter because it greatly minimized the snow/ice buildup on my windshield wipers. It's effect was visibly apparent when driving during snowfall. The snow appears to come horizontally toward the windshield and is diverted up and over as it nears the deflecter.

I never thought about the effect on snow. After last winter I may put one on just for that.
