Auto. vs. auto-shift

Other than clutching for starting and stopping, what are the main differences in an automatic trans. and an auto-shift? Is one clearly a better choice over the other for drivability or dependability?

An automatic, such as the familiar Allison, is a torque converter type tranny, very similar to an automatic in a car. It is built up and made much more durable for truck use, but it works on the car principles. Basically put it in drive and go.
Eaton and Meritor have what are auto-shifts. These are heavy duty truck trannies that do not have torque converters, and still must be clutched to get going out of 1st. From there, the Eaton one will up and down shift through its gears much like a standard automatic, or can be up and down shifted with the push of a button. The Meritor job does not shift automatically, but one uses the push buttons and does not have to clutch to make the shifts. These trannies are built internally like a regular manual gearbox, and use a computer to sense when the input and output shafts are in sync, then a mechanical actuator makes the shifts perfectly every time.
For lighter duty class 6/7 trucks the Allison is fine, anything bigger I'd go with the more rugged auto-shifts.
Those are the three I'm familiar with, there may be some others.

We have the Allison MD-3060 in our class 6 truck. Doesn't take long to spoil you when you're stuck in the middle of Friday afternoon rush on the 696 freeway. This tranny is rated for trucks up to 60,000 lbs GVW, so it's a little overkill in a class 6, but so far has been bulletproof.

they are both great only different i see is the price of tranmission
auto is about 6,000.00 dollars more than auto shift, also higher
maintains, my fl60 had auto matic and started out had to change trans
misson fluid every 25,000 miles and as they found out about different
uses they were used for fluid change out and became longer now it's
every 100,00 miles also has 2 fliters to change out they started out at 100 dollars per kit and now there lower,
but what every one you get make sure you have engine brake
as it makes a big differents going down hill, on fl60 i didn't have
engine brake and it made going down hill real fun sometimes, also you have to learn how to drive with it
