Another Newbie Question on Authority

Could someone please answer this question for me? If I have a sprint van hired on at one company am I running under their authority? And if I am, can I still work for the first company but call any other expediter companies and run for them too, or how does that work?
If I am sitting somewhere for a long time, can I call another company to maybe get me closer to back home to avoid deadheading so many miles?
I sure would appreciate anyone telling me how the authority and such as that works.

Did you sign a contract w/ 1st co. If so ask them they may get a percentage because you use there insuance and signs if you have your own ins. Tags and authoity you should be able to go wher you wanta go do what you wanna do[as the song says] there are several comps. That will let you do this check your contract first.
