the new Meritor 6X2 driveline concept, showcased last MATS, in now available to be installed on your new 2012 truck of choice.
and may i add it's about ***** time !
the new driveline goes along way to catch up with technology, but we are still light years behind the EU market.
it is amassing how well needed common technology, simply not available in N/A markets.
( insanely, you wouldhave thought it will be mandated years ago. just to show you that trucks safety design have very little to do with improving truck safety.)

Advanced technology differentiates Meritor

the new driveline incorporate a dead axle, and an automated interlock drive axle.
it is a great improvement over the traditional tandem, and will do well for safety, lower buying price, better fuel economy, and lower vehicle weigh.
the way it's work, the power goe's throe the 1st axle, without powering it, to the back axle.
the interlock differential, can be automated or manual, and will kick in when traction needed.
on auto, the ASR truction control will lock the rear axle, so that the 2 tires spin together, for better traction on snow and ice. same goe's for being stuck on a parking lot.

however, the system dose not goe's long enough, and can be a disaster in the making, as it's hold a key safety design problem.
with the vehicle weigh spread evenly across the 2 axles, traction may be lost, and the whole back axle will spin out.

here is how the system works in EU trucks, and how it needs to be installed over here.
the system MUST integrate an ' air bag drop valve' on the front dead axle., or at least customers MUST install a manual dash switch.
that valve will also allow for a lift axle, as standard.
this figuration is automated on most 6X2 EU trucks, and is being controlled by the ASR traction control module .
once the system react to a lost of traction, it drops some air out of the front dead axle. by doing so, more and more weigh is being transferred into the spinning back axle.
if then needed , the system will engage the automated interlock differential, while showing a light and a buzzer on the dashboard.

in many cases, the now only drive axle, can be configure to carry more weigh, therefor improving the chance of running with the dead liftaxle up .
