6 speed Eaton

Well it finally happened, expensive breakdown #1.

Driving under load somewhere between Saracuse, and Rochester, NY on I-90, coming off of the travel plaza, on a Sunday night, my co-driver, shifting from 5th into 6th found nothing. As he said it felt like the gear was there, but there was nothing. All of the other gears were fine, reverse, 1st etc....

Immediately we pulled over, and began to make phone calls to any repair facility that we may be familiar with, within possible driving or towing range, preferring Freightliner dealerships, or service points, just because thats the reference book I have in my truck. To no avail, of course everything was closed until morning, with the exception of a Petro truck stop, I believe at the 41 exit. With the phone call there, they refered us to a small local repair shop. I believe, without the business card in hand, the name of the shop is Smith Heavy Equipment and Truck Repair. He told me to bring the truck there immediately. Impossible due to the load onboard, but with a couple dozen phone calls by my dispatcher, she was able to locate a cross dock for us to use, and nearly 4 hours later we had the load happily on its way. Again I called Dave at Smith and he again told us to come right over, his mechanic was waiting. Did I mention it was now about midnight? His mechanic had come in from home upon our first call, and was patiently waiting, but with the snow now accumulating, all involved, including the mechanic, decided it be best to wait till morning to diagnose the lack of 6th gear.
Upon arriving at his humble residence, at 8:30 a.m. with a small shop, his mechanics cheerfully greeted us. Dave, the owner offered us a ride to a hotel, or back to the Petro while they took a look at the tranny, we should know something before noon.

I got a call about 10:30 a.m., diagnosis complete, yup 6th gear was gone, and the tranny housing was now grooved, barring rebuilding of that tranny. To make a way too long story shorter, they suggested a 9 speed tranny for my FL80, with a 3126 cat. With everything needed to complete the transformation from 6 speed to 9 speed, including labor, about $4,000.00, with a 2 year nationwide warranty on parts, and back on the road within 48 hours. Not too bad considering that Freightliner wanted about $6,0000.00 for the same, and well they couldn't get the parts for about 3 days, and another 2 days or so to put in a transmission, la da da da da.........etc....etc.....

Now, will it work or not, I guess we'll see, and I'll keep you posted. Any questions or suggestions go ahead and ask, I'll answer them or try in a timely manner.

If this mechanic lives up to his reputation, I'll be sure to pass that on to you too.......but for now all I can do is cross my fingers and pray that things work out.

By the way, the company I contract to is lending me the 4 grand & change to do the job, plus money for a hotel, food, and some sort of entertainment for the next 2 nights, to be deducted over the next 4 weeks from my settlement, even though freight had been slow, I have renewed faith in the company I lease to.

I have often thought that Companies should allow the owners put a certain percentage of each trips revenue into amaintenance account similar to an esccow account.

Congrats, good luck, and most of all enjoy your stay over don't look at it as a bummer. Treat yourself well.
We (I) would love there #s if the repair goes well. Anyone reading this if you ever break down in Eastern PA N of Philly give me a call guy at JGR used to work at a small towing repiar shop there knows what he is talking about. (told me not to buy a truck any truck) Still couldnt talk me out of doing it.

Your fuel mileage should go up, and save some wear on engine, if it has right amount of torque, GOOD LUCK, HANNER DOWN!!

Definitley keep us posted. I am thinking of doing the same with my 6 speed. Swapping out for a 9 speed. I have had breakdowns on the road also, and my company has been absolutley great with paying for the repairs and deducting from my settlements.

Go ahead and give your company a free plug, let us all know who furnished this good deed.

The 9 speed should easily extend the overall efficiency and life of that cat motor. If it's the one I just looked at, the gear spacing is much closer leaving you the ability to keep the motor in the "sweet spot" for better power.

Met one other person who had one set up just like this and he absolutely loved it. Helps your resale also!

Just some food for thought... I really like my 8LL O.D. 1150 torque trans mated to a Cummins ISC. Depending on your gearing, you may be stuck with a 9 direct. Adds an extra 100 lbs. over a 9 or 10 spd. but works like a charm & very forgiving and bullet-proof. 1st gear for 26 GVW to 32, and 2nd gear everything else. The 1st low only if you add a tandem. Also adds re-sale value. May also de-rate ISC to 300 hsp. This 315 should attain 9.3 mpg in simulation program- I bet the 300 will do better.

I guess crossing your fingers just doesn't work anymore, oh shucks.

Anyway, it took an additional 36 hours above and beyond the estimated, to finish the transformation, due to missing parts in the rebuild kit, and the mechanic forgot to order the larger pilot bushing that he needed, which, by the way, I had mentioned to him that he may need. OOPS!!!! The total repair bill, as I figure, including lost revenue, food, lodging, and entertainment(which we normally wouldn't have had), a whopping $9000.00. I had best get some pretty good fuel savings to help make that up. The bill from the mechanic (Smith's heavy equipment repair in Clyde, NY, soon to be at the Petro on the NY tollway at exit 41.), was $4180.00.

As the saying goes, if you can't find them grind them. Yea we sure did, and they warned us that we probably would. I haven't driven a 9 speed in about 6 years, and my co-driver hasn't driven one in about 20, so we figure if we only grind off about 2 years worth of gears, we'll be 24 years ahead, not to bad huh?

It was tight to begin with. I would try to float the gears and he tried to double clutch, and as time passed, we both prevailed. Fuel milage has increased, averaging about 10 mpg before the transformation at 63 m.p.h., and about 8.6 at 70 m.p.h., now averaging 9.9 m.p.g. at 70 m.p.h. going across the south into Texas. I haven't gotten a true reading at 60-65 yet because my co-driver has lead in his boots:p and claims the truck won't go under 66 m.p.h.. Just kidding, we are in the high 11's at 63-65 m.p.h., but expecting better after break in. Hell, with all indications we ought to be up aroud 23 or 24 m.p.g. by the end of summer.:p :7 ;) , O.K. so maybee I'm being a little optimistic, but we may be able to break the 12 m.p.g. marker. With the fuel prices the way they are, I'd be estatic.

I'd put a plug in for my company, but I don't want to upset anybody that hasn't gotten help from them. I will say that they are one of the major players in the expedite industry. They have gone above and beyond what I ever expected from them, not questioning the repair facility and my judgement of the upgrade. Hopefully, this decision, will not turn on me and bite me in the shorts.

I guess this is where I plug the repair facility,

Smith's Heavy Equipment Specialists, Clyde, NY (315)923-2229(owners personal cell#) & (315)521-4308(shop).($50.00/hr now, $65.00 at their soon to be new facility by the Petro at exit 41 on the NY tollway), referred by the Petro on the tollway. They really did seem to know what they were doing, at least they sounded like it, before they all came down with the Flu. That's right, they all came down with the flu and continued with undying determination to get me back on the road as quickly as they possibly could. Some of them working 16-20 hours a day, others spent their lunch on it, pun intended. The most ill of them all stayed on the job until he was satisfied of a job well done, racking up an unprecedented 60 hrs in almost 4 days, unable to hold down anything but liquids. They even threw in a handfull of ink pens, a couple of key chains, and some nifty low rise embroidered hats.

I did have the work checked by 2 other repair facilities after I left out of there, and both of them agreed that they couldn't have done the job as quickly, or any better given even perfect circumstances, so up to this point I would have to say that I am more than pleased with my first, less than anticipated, trip through NY state. The people of the state were friendly, helpful and not nearly as rude as I had perceived thanks to the friendly folks that control television broadcasting. Given the opportunity, I definately would not turn down any load going into or through the state of New York. The city itself I would still have to think twice about.
