Long time wannabe first time newbie

I finally started driving! Been hanging here for a while. Even went to the Expedite Expo in Wilmington in 06! Im not an o/o, just a company employee with Straight Shot Express. They have a few locations across the country. Mostly here in the Mid West though. The hub here in Terre Haute...

    Bolt Express

Rich, Thanks for the info. What carrier to go with is (as you know) a key issue of newbies. Always nice to hear positive feedback. Jay

    driving school

I got my class B without going to a "school". I didnt have a truck either. Went to C1 in Indianapolis. They have other locations as shown in this link. http://www.c1training.com/campuslocations.aspx There maybe some other schools in your area that does the same thing. You pay a small fee to...

    Dump trucks

Posting here is a good start. I am sure somebody who has been in that biz can help. If you dont get much info...call some of the big construction companies in your area and ask how they handle that part of their biz. Most will probably tell you they utilize owner operators and if they need any.

    Looking at being an expediter

I dont think you have to have a class C to drive vans. Some carriers may require it, but not all. (If I am not mistaken) You can get a class C pretty easy though if needed. Mostly involves a written test or two at the license branch. I got a class B without going to a school. I did need a...

18 Wheelers just don't like me

Draft off him and let him break the wind. Saves you fuel. :-) If I wanted to get around him that bad though...I would stay in the left lane beside him. More than likely he will encounter somebody slower than he is and will have to let you around since your next to him. :+

    Dock Height?

How much trouble do you van guys/gals have loading and unloading since your not dock height? (I may consider something smaller than D unit) But, if I buy a cube van or something...I will have to find a way to carry all my junk. I pack everything but the kitchen sink when I travel. :7

    Synthetic Oil...........

I hear Amsoil is real good in big trucks. Good investment since it does stretch your oil changes and is better on the engine. But, its more expensive and you have to do an engine flush if you dont start out using synthetic oil when engine is new.

    Emergency Hometime....

Broom, I take your opinions to heart. I will be cautious about how I enter the biz. But...I know the decision I make are santioned by God. I spend a lot of time praying and think about big decisions like this a lot. In my 39yrs...God has led me right so far. I do appreciate your point of...

    Emergency Hometime....

Paul, All of what you said is true. I may talk to my pal and see if he will let me drive for him 2 or 3 months. That probably isnt what most owners want. But, who knows. He may be in a pinch to get somebody behind the wheel and I would be buying him some time to get a driver that plans on...

    Emergency Hometime....

All of what has been said so far (and some stuff that hasnt been said) is the reason I wont enter the biz as a driver for somebody else. Anytime you work for the other guy, you end up losing or giving up things I want to feel satisfied. Control and money. No matter what biz it is...people in...
