the seven people you meet at expo

Forget the name badges. Clearly, OVM's pants were the hit of the show. If he will tell us where he got them, there is plenty of time to order them in bulk, a pair in the right size for every Open Forum member, male and female alike. Imagine the impression we all would make when non-forum...

Who's New in the Business? I'd Like to Hear From You

To those who posted, thank you for your contributions to this thread. Editing some of them for brevity, I read your responses in my Expo workshop. See this.

    Your Message to Expo Attendees

A big thank you to those of you who offered in this thread a message to the 2009 Expo attendees. I printed your responses and read them word for word in the workshop I gave. The attendees listened closely and seemed to enjoy hearing from "real" expediters out there in addition to those who...

Expedite Expo Where's The Freight? Presentation at Expedite Expo

I attended Mr. Sutton's presentation and did not see anyone making a video of it. Information he shared was similar to information he has distributed in the past. He operates a company named GPSnet Technologies, Inc. His large network of mostly small expedite carriers gives him a unique view...

Expedite Expo Expedite Expo 2009 Photos

Here is the link to the photos I took. In the interests of speed, the photo album is posted with no editing. You will find many poor photos and many that are redundant. Now that they are up, I will be going through them as time permits to edit (resize, crop, rotate, etc.) and delete the bad...

Expedite Expo Expedite Expo 2009 Photos

Diane and I took a total of 647 pictures at the show. It will take a fair amount of time to sort through them all to weed out the bad ones (there are many) so I'll begin by posting all of them "raw" in an unedited photo album on my web site. Link to follow tomorrow. It is taking a whle to upload...

Expedite Expo Expedite Expo 2009 Photos

The truck wash guy said he would be there tomorrow. He is set up in back of the convention center by the loading docks. Howerver, if you can get the truck washed on the way in, it would be better. For the time it takes, price you pay and quality of work done, a drive-through truck wash is...

Expedite Expo Expedite Expo 2009 Photos

Here are the first of what I hope will be many Expedite Expo 2009 photos posted in this thread. Today is setup day. Show trucks get washed by mobile wash crew. Heath Wood of Middle Georgia Freightliner arrives with transportation home, ready to sell the truck he drove to the show. Linda...

    Cargo Van/Sprinter/B-unit

When you say "constructive criticism" I hope you mean feedback that will be helpful to you and not simply information you want to hear. Purge from your mind right now the notion of putting your house up to secure a van loan. The recession and the slow freight and low rates that come with it...

    Logistic Sleeves

I don't know about the thread, but a vendor that carries them is New Haven Moving Equipment. They have an online catalog and a number of stores around the country. Here is the link to the logistics sleeve. They will send you a free catalog upon request.

    Countdown to the Expo

Diane and I are at the Roberts Convention Center now. A number of exhibitors are already here with their trucks and exhibit trailers. Tomorrow is setup day. Last year, we deadheaded from New York to attend the Expo. We delivered a load less than an hour away last night. Nice! The weather...

    Speed Limiter Phone Calls

I just read something very interesting in this thread where Turtle said, "...with Panther, anyway, if you get a load into Canada, just before you cross the border, you have the Speed Limiter set at a specific facility near the border. Immediately after coming back out, you have the Speed Limiter...

    Trying to figure something out

This is part of what makes the own-authority thing unattractive. Say you get the sweet deal exactly as you anticipated. What's to keep a guy like me from learning about the same shipper's needs and stealing the deal away? Say I drive the same kind of truck you do. I could easily walk into the...

Visiting the Biltmore House in Ashville, NC

Tinted windows, yes. Dark, no. If you look close at the photo above, you can see the green grass while looking simultainously through both the side window and the windshield. Dark tinted windows would obscure the grass.

    Trying to figure something out

It's simple. We make more money leasing our straight truck to our carrier of choice than we would if we got our own authority and booked our own loads. For us, expedting is about the lifestyle, which is why we are in a straight truck. But it is first about the money and meeting specific...

    Again....Mississippi

I was pulled in for a stringent Level 2 inspection in Ohio on Friday. Details and photo here. We had a HAZMAT load on. The officer worked from a car labeled "Hazardous Materials Safety Enforcement." Is that new in Ohio or just new to me?

    Terminology and other things

This Trucker's News article provides a brief introduction to own-authority paperwork. To learn more about own-authority, do a Google search on "Truck Operating Authority." A number of EO Open Forum members operate under their own authority. Perhaps some of them can explain the costs and...
