The Sinking Of The Titantic - FDCC

Without specifics, I have no idea what you are talking about. Edit: On the other hand, as I think about it, turnabout is fair play. There have been times when I have been insensitive to expediters who were going through a difficult time.

The Sinking Of The Titantic - FDCC

I don't think there will be a mass exodus. Some contractors will drift off to other carriers, their own authority, or other opportunities. Some have already done so. Some will do so soon. Some will do so later. Others will shift to flat-rate work. Still others will continue with the company...

The Sinking Of The Titantic - FDCC

You are drawing inaccurate analogies, making false assumptions and taking a lot of liberties stirring things up with contractors who are in a difficult situation at the moment. And for what? Your online entertainment?

    An Injustice Averted

Before I answer, can you describe the truck you bought? It is a D-unit, dry-box, right? Make, model, year, miles, sleeper?

I don't understand what you mean by "pay yourself back at $.25 per mile." Can you clarify?

Diane and I would not take that load. A thousand miles divided by 50 mph (the speed FedEx Custom Critical uses for load planning) is 20 hours of driving. Add in 30 minutes of labor on each end to get to a dock and complete the pick up and delivery to give you 21 hours of work. The price will...

    An Injustice Averted

You took me literally when I was asking a serious question. Let me rephrase. I know you and Bob look at loads the same way Diane and I do when it comes to calculating pay; that is, pay per mile for all miles. Fuel surcharges, accessorials, base rate...none of it matters. It is the total amount...

A load offer is a load offer. They all read the same on the Qualcomm screen. How do you look at them that would be different from anyone else?

    An Injustice Averted

Every time we do a non-reefer load, we run as a dry box truck. The dry-box option is available everytime we are in service and waiting for freight. If a good dry load is offered we will accept it but we don't see many good dry box loads offered. Have we considered running as a dry box? Yes we...

    An Injustice Averted

Diane and I have noticed the same thing. We know expediters who lease their trucks to competing carriers and are making more money than we are. That was not the case before but as our revenue declines, it is now. Diane and I were home last week and went into service early Monday morning in the...

You made a wise decision. The NTDC will be there next year and the year after that. The less distracted you can be while preparing for the event, the more you will enjoy and benefit from the process. Regarding "skill is skill," note that most NTDC competitors work hard to refine their skills...

    Express 1 Buyout

As I understand it, the management that is being "swept out" is the board of directors, which makes perfect sense since Jacobs will be taking the company in a different direction and building it to a size and scope that is beyond the imagination of the board members who are being replaced. He is...

    XPO Stock

I have not followed the stock but a quick glance at their web site shows significant increases in earnings. You spoke first in this thread about the stock being overinflated. That is what I responded to. Clearly, earnings are on the rise. Specifics about the expediting component and your dime...

    XPO Stock

At first glance, Express-1 stock (market symbol XPO) seems to be worth considering as a long term investment. The company is small but now happens to be run by a guy that has a vision to build it big and the experience and capital to make it happen. It seems to me that he is not investing so...

    An Injustice Averted

Are you talking about loads that pay really well? Our spreadsheet and run journal indicates they are becoming fewer and farther between. The change is the decline in such loads, which is not contractor friendly, unless you happen to be a flat-rate contractor willing to run under that contract.

    Express 1 Buyout

It may bump prices up but it will only help contractors if the carriers see value in paying them well.

    An Injustice Averted

Offer comes in this morning. Reefer load with marginal pay. Run info indicates TVAL tape but it is for freight that does not normally require TVAL service. Call to dispatch reveals that a data logger tape is requested for this non-TVAL load but there is no extra pay to provide the tape. Message...

    Another reason to visit...

That's a meaningful exhibit. Last time I attended an Expo I saw a man standing about 50 feet away from one of the antique trucks. He stood quietly with his hands in his pockets for a long time without taking his eyes off the truck. "Brings back memories," he said as I greeted him. We forget...

    Express 1 Buyout

I too am inclined to give Jacobs credit where credit is due. He has a proven track record of building large companies by identifying an attractive market segment and building through acquisition. He did not come up with $150 million to invest because he was lucky. He may not be immediately...
