    Workmans Comp

It depends on your home state and the domicile of your carrier. State laws vary from state to state. You are probably smart to have work comp or occupational accident insurance either way. As an independent contractor you are generally your only source of income. Covering medical bills is...

    changing carriers

Bottom line is changing carriers costs time and time is money. Do your homework!!!! Jumping from carrier to carrier will never make you more money. Look for long term relationships. The good carriers are all relatively competitive. Many times it comes down to relationship and a feeling of...

    more info on bolt

Dave is entirely correct!!!! It really comes down to the owner operator fully understanding the lease agreement before they sign on with a carrier. "quick pay" option normally always comes at a price. It is the same for a carrier. It is basically the same as the carrier "factoring" thier...

    Slowing down?

We have seen pretty consistent numbers for the last few weeks. We have actually been short of trucks and had to broker more loads out to other carriers than usual to support our customers. I think it is going to be pretty steady through the end of the year. January is the great unknown!

Bravo To The Mom and Pop Companies

From the company perspective, I like being a "middle size" company. You are large enough to have a sales force and house accounts, and the couple big boys like to use you vs. the mom and pops. They know you have sytems, policies and procedures and 24 hour coverage. Being middle size lets me...

    GPS Causes Bridge Crashes

Problem occurs more often in older cities. The city or state may have measured the bridge 20 years ago and marked it. Then you see an inch or two of asphalt added once or twice and 13ft 8 inches becomes 13ft 5 and you have an open top trailer!

    GPS Causes Bridge Crashes

You always have to be careful. We had a driver last month that was following the truck routed turn by turn navigation on our qualcomms last month when he hit a bridge in Chicago. On top of the "truck" routed directions the thing was marked 13ft 8inches. Now qualcomms provider did mark that...

Is your company really smart? Are you?

I agree. Once upon a time the bid boards such as NLM were the "premium" transportation option. Then pricing pressures from the big 3 made them sign up far too many carriers. Supply and demand set in and we saw the result. I guess for a really small carrier it makes sense to run the boards...

Is your company really smart? Are you?

Dave, you are entirely correct. I think owner operators need to look at other items than they traditionally do when choosing a carrier. Does the company have a true sales force? Where is the majority of your freight generated? Is the company financially solid? The last one is a...

Is your company really smart? Are you?

To many carriers use the bid boards as their primary freight source. This situation seemed to get worse with the economic downturn. When carriers had to cut cost and staff, many of them downsized their sales staff. Maybe I am crazy (most people in this business are!), but if sales are down...
