How do I get background on a fleet owner

If you have a 'communication problem', what are you going to do when you NEED the owner to respond immediately, such as if the truck breaks down in a major way? There has to be a level of trust on the part of both parties, and a commensurate living up to the responsibilities of your end - it...

lock your doors and get out you guns

Isn't a sad statement on OUR civil rights, that we who have been background checked, and drive into some very dicey places, alone, at all hours, are not permitted to carry concealed? What's the logic behind that? Let me guess: road rage, right?

    Your spelling!

Terry is a master of one liners, no question. :) If you're interested in the evolution of American English, though, there's a book by Bill Bryson, "American Made" that clears up some of the mysteries of the language. And if you've never had the pleasure of reading any of his books - Bill Bryson...

HELP??? Where to go??? Not go???

"Good" is a subjective term: it means what YOU think it means, so how can anyone recommend a 'good' carrier for you? We all have our own preferences, ya know? The most we can recommend is what I listed in the first reply: gather as much information as you can, to decide what you will consider...

HELP??? Where to go??? Not go???

Ramblinman: welcome to EO! You've found the right place to get answers, ideas, opinions, etc, so don't blame us if you don't get rich, ok? Seriously, the answer remains the same: start with the Newbies FAQ, then Newbies Forum, then proceed through every forum, (ok, you can skip the 'just for...

    Riddle me this?

On the $2 bill issue, I think it caused problems for everyone who used any kind of money collection device, such as cash register drawers - they're all designed to hold the coinage & bills traditionally used, and have no place to put another denomination. Both the $1 coin and the half dollar...

lock your doors and get out you guns

60MPH: I appreciate the effort you've put into finding the correct information, and I'd tend to believe you're right. BUT, as most of us drive interstate, it's not much use to be legally able to carry concealed in some states, but not others. I mean, really - do you ditch the weapon somewhere...

What if you break down or get sick?

Sorry Redytrk, but I totally disagree - no dispatcher will EVER make a decision on who will drive a truck that I own, or am resposible for, while I'm able to say NFW. I just don't trust that my best interests are at the top of their list, ya know?

What if you break down or get sick?

While a carrier probably wouldn't make such a request, a dispatcher very well might, especially if caught up in the urgency of getting the freight delivered, when an unexpected situation develops. And a dispatcher asking a driver to "take one for the team" is hardly a novelty, sigh.

lock your doors and get out you guns

Turtle made an excellent point: thieves are opportunists, not planners. Whenever I leave my truck, I remove the Garmin from it's holder, and place it out of sight. That's a lot easier to do than replace it.

Somehow, I don't think anyone who could sit in Detroit for 15 days is "self motivated", but best of luck to you, Remus - I think you're gonna need it...

What if you break down or get sick?

I sure hope you asked 'the suit' why, if they don't want their drivers to make any money, don't they just have EVERY load towed?

What if you break down or get sick?

Regardless of what the customer wants, no carrier has the authority to put another driver in a truck they don't own - nor would they want to assume responsibility for any damage that might occur, were they to do so. Just as if the truck were involved in an accident, or a breakdown, the freight...

lock your doors and get out you guns

My younger daughter has a black Lab that always lets you know when someone is around - right after they knock on the door, lol I like Rich's air horn extension, it's a great idea - powerful, but nonlethal deterrence, that's the ticket!

lock your doors and get out you guns

I've already made it such a habit to lock the door, and replace keys on beltloop, as soon as I get in the truck, that it's automatic now. But it's a good heads-up, thanks.

    Truck won't start

Um, I ran the generator all night, with the battery charger on - apparently have one or more bad batteries. I listen to the CB, but have had some unpleasant responses when asking for anything in the past, (wiseguys, you know), so generally don't talk over the radio. All it needed was a...
