Anything on any vehicle which can block air, such as an extended roof will decrease fuel mileage. Putting crome stacks on a tractor will decrease mileage as an example.

I have them on my sprinter and they do help with stability. During storms when I look out the side mirrors it's clear to the rear. After a snowstorm the sides of the van were black, but the rear was still mostly clean.
