VICTIMS OF OUR OWN SUCCESS ??

Supply and demand is the basis of any business. But, to make money in this business it is all about taking the right loads at the right time at the right location. You can still be a profitable paid tourist if you stick with your guns and not just take all the cheap freight. Give and take but...

    Driver Shortage

Ok - well, here we go again! Yes there is a driver shortage. Yes the quality of drivers, thanks to the ATA, has dropped. Yes carriers do not care about the driver - they can always replace us. So what do we do? We fight for a decent rate on every load we take. If you don't like the offer -...

    Independent or Company...

I did both the class-a through a school training and then got my class-b on my own. If I had to do it again I would skip the school and grab the class-b first - just to see if you like this kind of work without investing alot of cash.

Is it important for your carrier to be certified?

RE: Is it important for your carrier to be certifi Like you said the ISO certification does provide some leverage and that is the point I am making! If it provides some leverage then you get a one-step advantage over the smaller carriers who do not want to invest in such a program. I...

Is it important for your carrier to be certified?

RE: Is it important for your carrier to be certifi I am going to disagree here on the previous post above. If NLM said it is not needed to do business with them but it would not hurt - that is actually saying two different things. And I think it would be safe to say better to have it than not...

Is it important for your carrier to be certified?

RE: Is it important for your carrier to be certifi As I researched for my next carrier I found that the 'tier one' companies, the big boys - are all certified. Panther, UPS Expedite, Landstar along with others like Express-1. I would think since these are the guys moving alot of the loads out...

    Expedite vs Truckload/Less Than Truckload

I agree and that is what I do when figuring out the load pay - dead head miles plus actual trip miles. If the pay does not meet my requirements on pay I turn it down. Now, if it gets me out of a slow area and maybe I have been sitting to long or it gets me back into the main service area of the...

SPLIT AND A TERRIBLE OWNER-OPERATOR AGREEMENT

broompilot - I did not take that the wrong way - dont worry. It would be nice to have some sort of section where we could all file our complaints and comments about owner-operators and carriers. But like you said it may cause more problems than preventing. I like how the OOIDA in the member...

    DOT Medical card question..............

I have found that some carriers will accept your valid DOT physical card while others will prefer you take another physical by their preferred doctor. Just ask - and they will tell you what they need.

    Personal attacks

To all those that have disagreed with me, OH AND GEE there was plenty, and for the few that have at least let me bite my own foot off, MERRY CHRISTMAS TO EVERYONE! And I look forward to learning more from you pesky veterans! Thanks for the pointers - and at least now after biting my own foot...

SPLIT AND A TERRIBLE OWNER-OPERATOR AGREEMENT

arkjarhead - Oh no! Don't become like me whatever you do and get offended or honked off with the comments and thoughts of others on this site. It has taken me awhile to notice this but most of these people are here to help. What a did not notice at the start is some of us tend not to phrase...

SPLIT AND A TERRIBLE OWNER-OPERATOR AGREEMENT

Yea, one would think with all that experience I bragged about I would have known about the gray area and reading the fine print. But, keep in mind, what makes the worse - it wasn't a lease it was just a straight ole' fashion 'drive my truck and make a decent living' arrangment. So you would...

SPLIT AND A TERRIBLE OWNER-OPERATOR AGREEMENT

Stupid tax - that is a great way to describe it!!!!!! I have discussed this with several of you and am thankful for your input. I have also been contacted by several of the o/o's here offering a spot with them - once again thank you so very much. I am to be back on the road 1/2/07 with the...

SPLIT AND A TERRIBLE OWNER-OPERATOR AGREEMENT

You all have brought up good points. Instead of bragging about my past 15-years of business experience in another business, I should have done more asking than talking, and been taking notes instead of shots at others. To answer a few of the questions, no this was not even a lease/purchase...

SPLIT AND A TERRIBLE OWNER-OPERATOR AGREEMENT

Is it me or am I off here. I thought the standard in this industry for payment was generally one of three: 60/40, 40/60 or even a set per mile pay. The o/o I am driving for just sent me his settlement info with all my deductions which includes nearly $535 for the 'use' of his truck and 15% of...

    Home For The Holidays?

Hawk - We very seldom agree, but, gosh darn it, congrats on the litte one! Just teach him how to play defense and my beloved Colts can use him! Good luck to you and your family!

    Are These The Bad Times?

Like the one post said, what is bad for him, may be good for you. I think not every indicator, report or situation is going to fit everyone's game plan. If freight is not moving for one plant for one carrier that same plant could have plenty of freight for another carrier based upon service...

18 Wheelers just don't like me

I would agree - don't worry about it, simply pull pack around him for a bit and sooner or later your time will come to move around him. Heck, he is in his own world too and more than likely doesn't even notice you trying to move about him. Like the other post said - there are other things to...

    Personal attacks

As one of those that have, on many threads, taken opposing views as a personal attack I would agree. It is time for all of us, and that includes me, to take opposing views as constructive input, to not then fire back with remarks that become hateful and insulting to others. I know I am working...

ANOTHER TOLL ROAD HEADING OUR WAY?

Just when we leased our one toll road out to a private company here comes this plan from our beloved governor. INDIANAPOLIS (December 12, 2006) - Indiana Governor Mitch Daniels announced today the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) and Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) have...
