    Expediters Going Hungry, For Real

There are usually some common factors with those who fail in all forms of trucking: -The person(s) had no idea of exactly what it was they got themselves into and how deeply it would affect their lives. -They heard about others being successful and thought "that can be us too" without...

    Shreaders Hungry!

The taxman in Canada says 7 years. I don't know the rules in the States. We have our own rules which states that we keep everything forever. Cardboard banker archival boxes filled to the brim and appropriately labeled don't cause us any grief but may save some down the road.

    Classes of CDL

We need clarification of exactly what you are talking about here. Is it the driver's licence? Even if he has his own truck he is still a driver.

    Classes of CDL

If he doesn't have it already, I would advise getting the Ontario class "A" with the "Z" endorsement: Licence Types That way he can operate anything he is tossed the keys to. I have the equivalent in Quebec and can operate everything in our fleet from straight trucks to tractors pulling...

Nicole and I offer our condolences and prayers to his family and close friends.

365 days later..a newbie speaks out

Learning takes time. It is not possible to be both learning and surpassing revenue numbers of those with the steep learning curve behind them. As well, I'd like to point out that one does not simple learn the business or how to operate a vehicle safely and it is over with... as if to say the...

365 days later..a newbie speaks out

It is pretty common knowledge in the trucking industry that there is a high rate of newbie failures, so how do we reconcile that with your statement above? Can you support this theory with citation?

    Understanding Return on Investment (ROI)

I could ask Nicole to step in and provide instruction on ROI but that would only lead to billable hours considering she is a CGA - Certified General Accountant in Canada. I'm concerned once we plowed through ROI ad nauseum that then there would only be ROA, ROIC, ROCE, ROE, ROGIC.. etc, etc...

    dazed and confused

Get yourself a motor carrier road atlas and do your own trip planning. The process will be painful at the start but become much easier as you go along and start going back to some of the same places. After you master the road atlas and the manual way of trip planning then consider getting...

Do you get sick of the food?

With a straight truck you will find the options for parking much better than the longer articulate tractor/trailer rigs. There is a lot of discussion in the forums on this issue alone. We have never ordered anything to the truck, but have always managed to find parking close to if not at a...

    Expediting for me? Opinions Needed!

You mentioned at the outset a love for driving. You will be doing plenty of that, but that does not always translate into an enjoyment of the type of driving you will be doing when operating a truck. It is one thing to enjoy taking a car or small truck out for a spin at a time of your...

Do you get sick of the food?

Starting out you will find your expenses increased by eating "out" rather than preparing meals in the truck if you have the facilities. With your own facilities you can prepare pretty much anything you want anytime you want it. Simply need to find a grocery store and stock up. This makes...

    General Economic Conditions

I suppose a newbie these days would be _lucky_ if they obtain any _ROI_ after entering the business. Please refer to discussions about luck and ROI for further information. :D

    General Economic Conditions

I'm really not trying to be difficult here; however, it seems to me there is a place for ROI in a thread titled "General Economic Cond" as related to newbies entering the expediting business. What I have a hard time getting my head around is the notion of how ROI can be considered an abstract...

strange people knocking on your door

Cannot say as I'm a fan of looping the doors together. In an emergency if you need quick exit the last thing you need is to fumble with a "security system" holding the doors shut. Get a quick release ratchet strap and practice releasing it until you can do it in the dark with your eyes shut.

    How's your weather?

We had a driver call in from the Ottawa Valley region of Canada yesterday who said he was shutting it down until conditions improved. Yes, by all means shut down in the nearest safe location... no arguments. Learned this morning the area received 18 inches of snow that started yesterday...

    General Economic Conditions

The interpretation of posts is often difficult to read in the absence of facial expression and body language. The fundamental problem is that there is no rigid generally accepted interpretation of posts and as many ways to interpret those posts as there are folks reading them.

    General Economic Conditions

With respect to newbies how would you substantiate this below considering not everyone jumps in from the same position? The statement below is rather broad in scope and subject to individual interpretation. With respect to in depth discussions about ROI, ROC and ROA and other accounting...

    General Economic Conditions

Actually, it *would* be a shame if that happened. Why? Because not everyone's circumstances are the same. What may be working for you may not necessarily work for others. Initially for newbies the focus should be squarely on learning the business inside/out and generating revenue...
