    Tax Deductions For Non-Owner Operators

Hello, I am a Canadian van expediter who drives for a fleet owner. I get paid a percentage of our gross revenue, with no taxes taken out of my pay. Last year was my first year expediting and I made about $40,000 CAD (About $30,000 USD). I went to H&R Block today to get an idea of what I will owe...

Is expediting worth the time, drudgery and trouble?

I think most people who do it simply enjoy the lifestyle of living on the road and aren't in it for the money. I've run the numbers and I firmly believe that very few van expeditors (probably less than 10%) are netting more than 40,000 a year (USD). And when you factor in all the waiting time...

Hangin' out the side of the van, sweatin'....

I work for a small carrier. I don't think they even look for loads on the weekend as our office is closed Saturday and Sunday. I've been trying to move to a larger carrier for a while, but I've called the recruiters at every reputable company I can think of and none of them are taking on more...

Hangin' out the side of the van, sweatin'....

Yes, nothing really moves on the weekends. I have been in expediting for nearly a year, and I have never gotten a load on a Saturday or a Sunday. Literally not a single one. So what I do on the weekends is either deadhead home if I'm close enough, or I get a hotel for Saturday and Sunday...

Cargo Van How slow is it?

I've been stuck in Charlotte, North Carolina since Friday. If I don't get a load today, it will be a record for me for longest I've ever waited.

    June "Bugs , Loads & Banter "

This has also been my best week in a long time. Glad that things are finally picking back up after how painfully slow the month of May was for me.

    Insurance

I was thinking the same thing as I was reading those posts. I don't know how they could possibly make a living with those costs, unless they are with a company that is paying a very high rate per mile.

    Pulling an All Nighter

In case any of you were wondering, it paid $0.89 per mile. I feel like that’s a fair rate for a daytime run, but not so much for an overnight run. Especially one where I had hardly any time to waste.

    Pulling an All Nighter

Of course not. I’m getting a bit fed up with the company I’m with to be quite honest. But I’m viewing it all as a learning experience as this is still my first year in expediting. I’m strongly considering switching to a different company just to see if the grass is greener.

I made it with 40 minutes to spare

    Pulling an All Nighter

Oh yeah I will. I’ve never been close to falling asleep at the wheel or anything like that. For me, the exhaustion often doesn’t kick in until after the run is completed.

    Overflow from other Carriers

Well, I usually just sit and wait when that happens. Don't get me wrong, we do have some of our own customers. But I would say that about 80% of the loads I take are overflow from large carriers.
