On Friday March, 27, Iranian missiles destroyed or damaged a number of US planes on the ground at the Prince Sultan Air Base in Saudi Arabia. Two planes are confirmed destroyed; one E-3 AWACS radar plane, and one KC-135 Stratotanker (used for in-flight refueling). AWACS replacement cost is estimated to be $700 million. Stratotanker is $250 million.
Additionally, at least three other Stratotankers were damaged by shrapnel (Iran says 5 were totally destroyed). The US says the three are undergoing air battle damage repair (ABDR) to determine if they can be patched up and quickly returned to service, made safe enough to fly to the Oklahoma depot for major repairs (takes years), or are damaged beyond repair. Reports from the US and Iran about these 3-5 tankers are incomplete and unverified beyond the official sources making the claims.
How do I know this? Having become a heavy AI user, I don't read the news like I used to. I ask my AI apps for news updates when I want them and receive instant summaries. All of them provide their sources on request and if something seems questionable or in need of verification, I'll click the links to drill down and cross-check.
In these days of fake news, images, and videos, and partisan-driven content, I frequently cross-check the "news" AI provides. In the case of the Sultan Air Base strike, it is clear Iran is exaggerating its claims and the US is being slow to release the details. It would be easy for the US to allow journalists in to photograph the planes in question. That has not happened. Instead, the US is downplaying the event and suppressing information release.
