Absolutely, Sir.

Pretty much anal when it comes
to finances. From loaded to empty
miles and a blended cost of both.
And all accessorial cost are factored.

How many loaded miles are you running per year?

That is a commonly asked question but my answer to it would be misleading and may not provide the true information you seek.

Our loaded miles per year are X. But by itself, X is a meaningless number because we do not get paid by the mile. We get paid by a percentage of the load.

We have sometimes deadheaded hundreds of miles to pick up freight that moves only a few miles. For example, on a certain run, our loaded miles might be 6. But we would have put 350 miles on the truck to go pick up the freight.

When calculating the pay for a run like that, we would consider it a 356 mile run. Say the load paid $712 (to keep the math simple). That works out to $2.00 a mile, only six miles of which were loaded (freight on the truck).

On a run like that, talking about loaded miles is meaningless. The important numbers are the 356 miles you drove and the $2.00 per mile you got paid to complete the run.

For companies that do not pay a percentage of the load, the loaded miles question may be more infomative, but even there, there are other factors to consider.

I think it would also be helpful to break it down by solo or team; ie a person could answer 192000mi/yr, but it's a team, who might or might not be doing any better or worse than a solo doing 96000mi/yr.
