Soon I will be 58 and retire with a small pension. I have few financial resposibilities so I am looking for some thing to do that I will enjoy and still make a few bucks. I have talked with many OTR drivers and they all seem happy with what they do except those with young families. Do you feel I am too old for this type of work? I am worried about the fatigue factor. Being away from home isn't a big deal, my wife would be glad to see me drive away for a week or so. Also, could I be picky about what loads I take or where they are going? Thanks

Fifty eight is certainly not too old for this work. There are many drivers out here doing expediting that are in their 50!s,60!s and even older. A few months back a driver that I knew who was a active driver passed away.He was in his 80!s plus his wife drove with him and she was in her early 80!s. I personally think it helps your mind as it gives you problems and details to be worked out, you will also get poed at your dispatchers at least once a week so this keep the blood flow moving.
As too taking loads that you want to ,most companies allow that but if you refuse too many they will refuse you. Good luck

It is common to meet expediters in your age range. You are wise to be concerned about fatigue. Young or old, a tired driver is a dangerous driver. Sleep management is important in expediting since you never know what time of day or night your next load will run. Make sleep a top priority and you'll do fine. For example, if you are laid over where there is a good movie in a nearby theater, be sure you have the rest you need before taking in the film.
