The driver of the tractor-trailer who was killed last night on I-75 southbound by East Ridge, TN. has been identified as Gurmukh Kalar of Canada.
Mr. Kalar was unable to escape his vehicle, which caught on fire after a chain-reaction collision with three other trucks late Thursday night just past the East Ridge exit, according to East Ridge police. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The crash occurred just before 11:30 p.m. Thursday, when a tractor-trailer rear-ended several other trucks that had apparently slowed because of construction further down the interstate, said East Ridge Officer Erik Hopkins. A passenger vehicle was hit with debris.
No one else involved in the wreck was seriously hurt, according to Officer Hopkins.
One of the trucks involved in the wreck was hauling lumber and the other was carrying pete moss, the officer said. Hazardous materials crews worked to clean up diesel fuel and motor oil they had spilled on the interstate.
The interstate was shut down completely for about an hour after the crash, police said. Law enforcement officials routed traffic from the interstate across the Ringgold Road exit until the road reopened about 7 a.m. today.
***Just a sad way for all of us to remember the little things about being safe when behind the wheel - like distance between the truck in front of you, speed and attention.***
