Tagging a truck with a pusher axle.

Will be buying a used 2003 International 7500 Class-8 with a single axle and an additional pusher axle. The truck is rated at 33,000GVW, but I am unshure as to what I will have to tag it for when I go to Lansing, MI to get the IRP Tags. The pusher has dual tires on it if that makes any difference at all. I was told by someone that I should tag it at 45,000 with the pusher because it is technically considered to be a tandem. Do I tag it at 33,000 or do I tag it at 45,000? The difference is going to mean a much higher price for the IRP Tags. Or is there a way of telling what the trucks GVW is by the type pusher axle that is mounted on the truck? Need some help here.

Unless I'm mistaken you can only carry whatever you have it registered at so if you register it at 33k and carry anything over that you can be cited crossing the scales if you are pulled in.

There should be a yellow "Body Builder's" tag somewhere in the driver's side door jamb that indicates which Company modified the truck and gives the GVWR with the pusher lowered. If not, you need to find out the rating for the pusher....there may be an ID tag somewhere on the axle itself.

A call to the Body Co. or the MI BMV should get you headed on the right direction.

The previous owner of my 10 wheeler plated it for 48,000 in MI. I plate it for 46,000 here in oHIo, $860.00 for the year, 48 states.

I was going to purchase a lift-axle, then backed out of it. I had already purchased (upgraded) my plate to 42 GVW for MI. I was going to install with two 225/70R22.5's rated at 11K. Total capacity would have been 44K. In MI. the next step up is to 48K plate.
The difference in price over 32K was about $200 (or about $765).
Just remember, up or down that truck is rated at 44-46 in most states, whether you have two or four tires on that lift. Also, that truck is now a three axle truck and one needs to stay in lanes designated for trucks only. With the axle up, you do not need to pay the higher tolls...
