Sweatshops on Wheels: Winners and Loosers in Trucking Degegulation by
Michael Belzer. Michael Belzer is a former long haul driver and is now an instructor at Wayne State Univ. He has written a 256 page, hardcover book ($35.00) about the condition of trucking since deregulation. Although he focusses on the long haul truckers, much of what he has written is applicable to the expediting industry. For example, he points out thattodays truck earns 30% less than he did 20 years ago and no longer enjoys the income of middle class Americans. Drivers work 60 hours per week and is unpaid for many of those hours. He also discusses the trucking industry and the problems associated with underfinanced trucking companies that are ignoring safety (vehicle maintenance) due to lack of money.

I am in the process of reading this book and would be glad to provide
postings, pointing out key points in his book. The first couple of chapters are filled with statistics and other dry data, and then later chapters get into more specifics.

If you have a genuine interest in this subject matter, I would recommend this book to you.
