Super D, another angle

I've been thinking about the concept some more and have another idea. A 28-30 foot flatbed with a Conestoga kit or similar curtainside system would offer multiple possibilities. It would be the expediting truck but if there wasn't a load available it could haul any LTL load, not just van loads. The only thing it wouldn't be good for is reefer work however that seems least important. I've found numerous LTL's for flatbeds and stepdecks when looking for an LTL for my truck.

Sounds like it is time to just go "Big Rigging" again. Rates are up and if you want to go LTL-ing now would be as good as any to make the plunge. I don't think your curtain side would work, ie they leak. Good luck on your little big truck adventure.

I did some thinking along those lises also
The best of the rolling tarp systems or covered wagon tops is the Roll-tite

BUT

all of the covered wagon tops cost between $ 12,000-$ 15,000 OUCH!
If you are serious, go look at some used ones, some brands are
worn out trash after 5 yrs of use, only the Roll-tite's that I saw used had seemed to hold up very well.

They all leave a gap between where the straps go through on the edge of the flat bed, ok for a tarp load (iron, lumber etc.,) Not so sure about
a load of delicates, road spray would get up in there.

I've never really looked at one so I wasn't aware of the gaps or the potential for leaking. I just looked at it as a potentially more versatile unit that would be able to carry a wider variety of loads and therefore have more freight options available. I guess it's back to the drawing board.
