Good tip - I've come through there dozens of times and never knew about it. I've added it to my db of cities and info.
I like the two
Love & War in Texas restaurants, too, both near Dallas (in Grapevine and Plano). Both have live music, and the one in Plano has a nice outdoor stage, with trains going by frequently. Some local and national legends have played at each. They have a great menu, too, with things like Beaumont Bugs (crawdads) and Wild Boar Quesadilla. And lots of Shiner Bock. The one in Grapevine is at the edge of Grapevine Mills Malls, so plenty of parking for any size rig. I can't recall if the one in Plano has an adjacent lot large enough for TT or not.
Another place I like a lot with good food and good music, in San Antonio on I-10, is
County Line BBQ. Great outdoor stage and seating with tables, a weekly open mic with some real talent, and a huge parking lot out back. Saw Ray Wylie Hubbard there. There are a bunch of other County Line BBQ joints, too, around Texas (two more in San Antonio), though I haven't been to the others.
Gruene Hall, in New Braunfels, about 30 mi NE of San Antonio, is a great place for Texas music, too. It is the oldest dance hall in Texas and regularly has legends like Jerry Jeff Walker and Los Lonely Boys, though has plenty of up and coming local and regional bands too. Can't vouch for parking there. They often have a cool Sunday Brunch with Gospel, too.
In
Alpine TX (220 mi SE of El Paso and south of I-10 a good ways) is the very cool, very lively,
Railroad Blues. Don't know much about the food there, but the beer is cold, the crowd loves to dance, and the music is of a wide variety. Big parking lot across the street for bigger rigs.
If you ever get a chance, anywhere, to see a band called
Del Castillo, go. You won't regret it. Saw them at Railroad Blues and was just floored at their talent and stage presence.
Looking forward to checking out Southern Junction in Rockwall!
