>1. When registering your vehicle for the first time, how are
>you supposed to take care of the IRP?
You can get an IRP packet from you local DMV or down load forms from the internet if your state DMV IRP has a site on line.
>2. How can you estimate what your milage is going to be per
>state?
On your first registration you select the states you are going to want your IRP to cover as well as any Canadian provinces...you're going into. Most companies want you to be registered in all 48 states. If you are going into any Canadian provinces you need to register for them too.
They will use a formula based on the state you register in. They will take the average amount of miles a truck in your state drives in the other states and charge you accordingly.
You will need to show that you have insurance on your vehicle in many states.
In addition, some states let you register at any DMV and some only have designated DMV's usually located in the capital cities. I would guess that your registration will run you somewhere between $500 and $800 depending on the states you choose and the state you register in.
*****ALSO-be forwarned-there may be some sales tax issues in your state-We moved from Ny to Va so we didn't have to worry about this. (In NY we would have had to pay sales tax on our truck)
>3. Does your IRP need to be taken care of before you are
>legal to operate?
Yes. Your IRP is the registration/cab card for you truck.
>4. If so, what is the quickest way to take care of this?
There is no real quick way the first time. It is easier the second time because you will have your actual milage next year. The DMV will usually send you a renewal application and you will just have to fill in the blanks.(At least in my state the renewal comes filled in except for the milage.)
>5. If not, how long do you have to take care of it?
It took us a day and a half our first time. The clerk has to type milage for each state in and the computer figures out what you will have to pay for each state. We also found out that in our state all DMV's can do IRP but many only have one person working there that knows how to do it. They aren't real thrilled about doing it either...lol
>6. Where do you take care of it, at your local DMV office?
You have to call the DMV in your area and see where they take IRP's at. We got our forms right off the internet as well as the directions on how to fill them out.
>7. The IRP is the International Registration Plan, set up to
>equally distribute registration fees to each of the states
>traveled in
Yup it is
>Anything I may not have covered, please feel free to add or
>comment on.
You might want to check on the internet for the site on your state's DMV...many times they have a QA part that will explain things even further.
