Preparations are in full swing in Dayton as crews prepare for thousands to ascend on the Gem City for the First Four games of March Madness, not the mention the visit of President Barack Obama and British Prime Minister David Cameron.
Crews spent hours on Saturday setting up jumbo trons in the Oregon District for the First Four Festival on Sunday. The festival takes place on Selection Sunday when teams will be chosen to play in the tournament that will get started at UD Arena.
“The President wanted to share the American tradition of March Madness with Prime Minister Cameron and the two leaders look forward to a great game,” said Adam W. Abrams, White House spokesman.
“This official visit, the visit to Dayton and the State Dinner at the White House on Wednesday evening underscore the special relationship that the United States and the United Kingdom share.”
The pair will attend the first game in Dayton on Tuesday, March 13th at UD Arena.
Commuters on Tuesday will likely see some traffic delays and high levels of congestion when President Barack Obama and British Prime Minister David Cameron visit the NCAA First Four basketball tournament at the University of Dayton Arena.
For security reasons, officials have released few details about the president’s first visit to Dayton since being elected. But they said the police and security requirements of protecting the commander-in-chief typically lead to traffic issues.
“The president is a big deal,” said Todd Bagby, resident agent-in-charge with the U.S. Secret Service in the Dayton office. “It will impact the public, but we try to minimize that as much as we can.”
Officials said the president will land at the Wright-Patterson Air Force Base on Tuesday, and sometime thereafter, they may close some roads to give the president’s motorcade a path to the arena.
