NJ turnpike sign

There's a sign on the NJ tpk that bugs me because I can't figure out what it means. The top line has a letter U lying on its side pointing to the left and another U on its side pointing right. The bottom line is just the number 1000. I didn't think to measure the intervals, but it's on the median every mile or two, so it must be important to the NJDOT. I was in the southern half of the state yesterday, so I don't know how far north the sign goes. Anyone know what it means????

I believe that they are there to indicate, to emergency vehicles, that
there is a "break" in the concrete barriers, 1000 yards ahead. This allows them to cross-over and head in the opposite direction.
