Newbie Straight Truck in PA

Hi everyone,

I'm getting into this business with the help of an independent o/o with his own authority. He's buying a truck for me to run, something he's wanted to do for years but I was working for one of his shippers and they threatened to stop giving him freight if he "stole" me from them. And then they fired me.... HAHA! Anyway, he's looking at a 2004 Freightliner Business Class M2, cat engine, 190 HP, like new condition. He drove it and is ready to sign the paperwork. Because the GVWR is below 26K I won't need my CDL, at least right away until we decide to get a bigger truck down the road.
The truck has a 24' deck, I think it's 102" wide, but not sure, didn't ask him.... Anyway, I will be driving it solo, would like to stay in New England, OH, MD, VA, NJ areas for awhile until I get used to everything. He has a good relationship with quite a few brokers and has a good lead into military loads. Is there any advice anyone has for me or him? We both really have to make this work for us. I have no problem hauling anything, I will have tarps and chains. As long as it fits on my truck I will haul it, well as long as the rate is good. What type of rates can I expect? I know what he gets as a big truck driver, should I look for the same or more or less? He doesn't want me to, but I have no problem going to Chicago, and anywhere in between. We are both go getters so we are hoping that within 3 or 4 months we can be making some money with this. Any helpful hints would be most appreciated!

Thanks!

Sounds to me like you're going to be going down the "LTL & Hotshot" line of freight hauling and not Expediting.

Right?

If so, and you are getting into "HotShot" type of freight, your rates will be a lot better than Expedite rates.

LTL rates run about the same as Expedite.
