Friends,

I have a 50 year friend whose office job is being terminated and he will be out in the world looking for employment. Last week he heard Paul Harvey discuss a great need for truckers in this country. While I know the legal end of the trucking business, I am not familier with the joys and sorrows of being an over the road driver except what I have read.

I thought I had seen that one could look to earn upwards to 60k a year but logically that may come with experience. Anyone kind enough to pass on to me good stories and bad. What trucking schools he should avoid, which are great. Benefits of driving for a company vs being and independant owner?

Thank you in advance

A lot of variables here . I wouldn't pay for a trucking school . Many carriers provide free training but it requires about a 2 year commitment or they expect reimbursement for the training . He may have to go that route to get started . Earnings of $35,000 - $40,000 are more realistic the first year or 2 . I know I'm ignoring the opportunities in expediting . I'll let others offer that info . My personal recommendation would be to check with Schneider tank division . They offer free training and their is a real demand for tanker drivers with hazmat . Pay is better than average and as a rule there is less delay loading and unloading . He'd make more in 50 hours than freight drivers do in 70 just due to the quicker loading and unloading . Because of customers wanting assurance of no contamination many trips are dedicated - round trip pay , no deadhead . After a couple of years with Schneider he would be qualified for a top paying job with one of the major tank carriers .
