Toyota to build, not sell, new EV here | Wheels.ca

Leaving the ill-fated and mostly non-street-legal Zenn Neighbourhood Electric Vehicle out of the equation, it looks like Toyota will the first modern automaker to build a production electric vehicle here in Canada.

Already seen on the auto show circuit in prototype form, the production version of the RAV4 electric compact crossover vehicle will be built at Toyota's Woodstock, Ont., facility, beginning in 2012.

Toyota's first North American all-electric vehicle will tie a California-made powertrain from Tesla Motors to a Canadian-assembled RAV4 platform in Woodstock.

The Tesla electric powertrain, includes the battery, motor, gearbox and power electronic-management for the RAV4 EV.

Ironically, while the RAV4 EV will be sold to U.S. customers, Toyota Canada says “a decision about sales in Canada has not yet been made.”
